Naim DAC - Displaying sampling rate
Posted by: JYOW on 01 February 2010
Sorry for another Naim DAC question.
Just brought home the "Sara K." "Made in the Shade" audio only Blu-Ray disc, which contains "DTS-HD Master Audio", "2.0 LPCM" and "5.1 LPCM".
I played all three options outputting to the Naim DAC via a Cambridge Blu-Ray player, and none of them made the "hd" light lit up, unlike other Blu-Ray discs and DVD-Audio discs.
The box has no indication of the sampling rate but according to Elusive Disc the PCM track is 24/88.2. Any idea why the "hd" light remains off? Does it mean the track is not being decoded as 88.2?
Is there any way, secret buttons or something, that lets me know what sampling rate is being played?
And any idea what is happen with this supposedly "high def" disc?
Confused....

My guess is that it is not 88.2/24 especially since other blurays do light the HD light
Though a quick google suggests its is....hmmm

I have got a very similar issue on mine.
Trying to read The Naim Label Test Files (24b/96K) trough my squeezebox but the HD light remains OFF...(Theses files from Naim should be OK isn't it ???)
The manual says:
"The hd indicator illuminates to indicate that the input data stream is “high definition”. High definition is defined as any data stream with a sampling rate above 48kHz."
What's wrong ?

Probably the SB downconverting it to 48k.

When I had the demo unit, I tried 24/96 material from my Transporter. The HD light came on and it sounded fantastic. The sample rate has to be over 48kHz for it to consider it HD. I believe the Squeezebox only supports up to 44.1 - HD material get downsampled by Squeezecentre before it is streamed.

Being packaged in blu-Ray disc one would assume that it is hi-def. And according to several mentions on the web the LPCM is 24/88.2
I also tried the other two multiple channel tracks, also no HD light
if I bought a 44.1khz blu Ray audio only disc I would be a little peeved
better email Stockfish records to investigate
to naim: is there a way to indicate the sampling rate being played?
Btw, squeezebox is 24/48 max, the previous poster could should check the settings, 88.2 may have been downsampled to 44.1

Bluray spec only allows 24/48 output over spdif.

I didn't know that. Is this in the specifications or just a practice?
I cannot recall but I cam pretty sure that I saw output of 24/96 displayed from Blu-Ray discs when i still had my Weiss DAC.
Regardless, the Naim DAC is supposed to display HD light at 24/48.
BTW all the BluRay discs I have played through the Naim DAC had the HD light on.

It is part of the bluray specifications. I don't know if it is a software or hardware limitation. If it's software, some discs might not be encoded with the block.
No idea with the HD light. I always thought a sample rate indicator would be nice with the SN and now the DAC.

Ok I stand corrected regarding SB supporting 44.1 or 48 max. In either case it needs to be over 48 not equal to 48 before the HD light comes on. Bit depth is not detected.

You are Correct: It's an SB issue!!
Took the sames Naim test files on an USB Key and the HD light is ON now.
Guess what? the sound differs depending on the key you are using....some new discussions on the way...
Tried at the beginning with a very low end key...berk !
Many "scratches" (just like an old LP...might be cheaper than an LP12 then... )

Maybe your Bluray player is downsampling HD tracks when using it as a transport. I remember my Denon DVD-3930 doing that with DVD-A discs because of protection purposes.

It may be somehow doing that, but somehow it is not doing that with my other video Blu-Ray discs.
It seems ironic that the only pure audio HD blu-Ray disc I have is playing it in 44.1 sampling rate
