Sunday Afternoon, sade Playing, Contemplation: Whats wrong with my deck?!

Sorry to keep on, but this information is like gold to me.
Anyhoo, plenty more record buying this weekend and a disturbing pattern emerging with second hand vinyl.
On the very outer edge its very crakly then it goes good then towards the very centre of the record it turns to mush, loss of dynamics etc as if the needle is coated in muck but it is not, so is this my end or problems with the records from previous playing?
Also a few new records I own have terrible siblence on treble side, confident its not me as its only a very few records, so I assume this comes down to the pressing, do I have any come back with where I bought it?

He he apart from the excellent record bargins I got 8 cans of stella for a fiver. So no cartridge playing today.
I felt I deserved it after a day of paint balling yesterday where I came home so damaged I went straight to bed till this morning! I am still hurting.

From your description it sounds like your cartridge could be worn out. How old is it? How long have you had it? MC or MM? Do you clean it? How are you cleaning your records? Given that you've been buying second hand, what kind of condition are they in?
I also have always bought a lot of second hand vinyl. Last year I discovered a place that had a lot of used vinyl, some of it fairly rare, but in so-so condition. Since they were cheap I brought many titles home to check out and this seemed to precipitate the demise of my cartridge. I'm not sure if dirty records were the cause or if it was simply worn out--it had about 3-4 years on it.
If your cartridge is a moving coil, perhaps it needs to be flux-busted. I've never owned a flux buster (and I'll leave it to others to describe the technical reason for doing it) but the rolled off treble kind of sounds like that could be a possibility.
Good luck,
Markus

Actually I am contemplating removing the cartridge and waiting fot the arrival of the LP12 because in fairness I don't really have a clue and I am worried I am trashing the cart.
Or have I finally arrived at the door of butt anal?
Ah never mind, I feel a bit of baby mammoth coming on, (CD!)

Oh you got some Baby Mammoth? Which one?
BTW, when's your LP12 coming? What with my LP12 and your Klyde, we'd make a great team

IMHO the Townshend protractor is the best.
I asked Max about it going back into production at one of the UK shows some time ago, and his response was very positive, something about "next year". That was well over a year ago.
I've just had a look around his site and found under "Spare Parts" on the price list his Elite Alignment Guage.
