Worthwhile cartridge tweak.

Posted by: jonni on 27 March 2003

just tried out a "tweak" I've been thinking about on my dynavector cartridge.
the signal from the cartridge has to get to the tonearm wire via for pins on the back that are colour coded. At such low levels the signal is harmed by bad connections. The tags on my wilson benesch arm are not the tightest fitting either.
I wondered what would happen if I prised off the colour coded tags that fit over the pins to identify them , leaving more metal contact surface exposed?
I wasn't expecting much but was quite amazed Eek at the increase in dynamics, solidity ,low level resolution and presence and bogie coming from the record.
I'm off for more listening Smile

I believe there is a danger of melting the very thin wire in the coils if you solder the pins.

I've cleaned the cartridge tags before now , and this effect is different.I believe its partly down to the constrution of my cartridge tags which are a loose fit on the dynavector compared to other cartridges I've owned ,and which can not be "crushed" smaller due to their design. They tapper inward toward the back so only the rear part grips the pin.Now they can be pushed further on and have a greater grip which is obvious by just trying to wiggle them.
The biggest beifit seams to be in the treble which is much cleaner and clearer.
I notice that some manufacturers leave these colour coded tags off purposefuly.

The Incognito wiring loom comes with fabulous tags, as does the ARO. Both of these have tags which are shaped such that they are naturally sprung (the ARO's are horseshoe shaped). I have fabulous connection on my Dynavector with either tag type. You may wish to consider changing your Wb ones for ARO or Incognito ones.

Frank.

Tom,

I think that's a bad idea!!

Have you seen how thin the internal wires are on this DV T-K?

cheers, Martin
