Just purchased a wind up solar powered radio(mono)for the missus(well she does iron all day,it's the least i can do)and not a hint of mains pollution,it does however go a bit funny if you move, breath or make any sudden moves at all,but no mains pollution,may-be it's the way forward

You obviously don't remember treadmills. Dogs, donkeys, human powered. Mind you they'd have to be isolated in another room or you couldn't hear the system for the heavy breathing. Can't say if this is a real problem or not. Perhaps "The Scottish Co." could be persuaded to make an extra long drive belt? It might be an idea to have a window into the treadmill room. To see if the sudden wow is caused by exhaustion. Or just "the wife" getting off the treadmill to do some ironing. Big Grin

wind up radio: A friend of mine brought one of these from SA. Though not exactly hifi. It is great for the bbq pits as there is no AC down there. It plays about half an hour when listening to the radio and safes a fortune in batteries.

solar power cd player.
Of course this is possible but since many of us mostly listen at night you would still need to store the energy somewhere, conventionally in a battery. As batteries change their output voltage and power as they discharge I don't think they'd be ideal for topend hifi. A solar powered walkman recharger would be a good idea.

But solar powered music already does exist. Five years ago I stayed in a village in Zimbabwe without electricity. The priced possesion was a solar cell on a 20' pole with barbed wire around it. These would be connected to a car battery. Our battery would drive a fluoro light. It meant we could stay up till 7pm, (dark at 6) without spending a fortune on candles. Some guys drove their boom boxes of these car batteries.

You can buy solar cells in Maplins.

Could probably run a Walkman from one?
