Copy protected CD's
Posted by: fled on 10 March 2003
Have just contacted Naim (and Audio T) and there is a Firmware fix for CD5, not too sure about other cdp's ?
Anyhow the fix can be done by the dealer for £35. I would have thought it should have been free, but then again !!

...about stuff I've read that DVD players may not be able to play copy protected CDs. Any word on this?

I've just played my only copy protected CD on my CD5, and a small section of music at the start of each track jumps. Have just contacted my dealer and I am awaiting their reply, as they are unaware of the problem.

Time for them to wake up?
Search for "Foo Fighters" or "copy protection" and you'll find a number of threads concerning this matter. Copy-protected "CDs" are not CDs -- simple as that -- and many of them will not play in your Naim CDPs, which operate within tight tolerances.
I will now be affected for the first time: Ordered Ben Harper's new CD from A&B Sound, where it will be available tomorrow, I think. However, here in Germany the album has already been released; my best mate, who's also got a CDX, returned his copy last week because it won't play properly. The absurdity: Because of copy protection, many music lovers' only option is to rip the music off the net.
I've started pestering manufacturers, distributors and retailers about this and I urge everyone to do the same. Buy the "CD" and then write to the culprits, using phrases like "Red Book" and "CD label", and ask them to supply you with a "CD" version of the album -- because that's what they advertised it as, and, oh, "it appears I have been sent me some sort of non-compliant music disc incorrectly labelled as a CD".
Finally I get to be all German and anal.

Take it back to the shop and demand a proper CD or refund - it is not a CD. Others on the forum have done this and have been supplied with a 'clean' version.

The new Turin Breaks skips on my CDS2. From another room it sounds as if it is intentional.
I will take it back.

Any news on the sound quality implications of this fix?

As for German and anal! WHo can say but I think this is one for the padded cell but if you have the original of "Swedish Nuns on Lust Island" then don't underestimate it's value. It's not worth as much as a copy of "Swedish Nuns on Lust Island 2 - The revenge" or "Bambi gets Fist*d" but I'd sugest E-bay for big $$$$"
To err is human; to really foul it up requires a computer.
