CDX2 goes "clunk"!

Posted by: Mike Hughes on 03 September 2003

My CDX2 has started trying to grab CDs away from me when the door is nearly, but not quite, shut. It feels (and sounds) as though some magnetic force is suddenly at work that hasn't been for the rest of the year and although there doesn't seem to be a detriment to the sound quality my gut feeling is that something bad has happened and I need to talk to my dealer.

In the meantime, has anyone else come across this problem; got any wisdom to share (this topic only please - yes, I know that's boring!) etc.

Very annoying this as I was just about to approach my dealer and say "XPS2 now please!".

Thanks in advance.

There is a micro switch that activates as the door comes shut.

On the CDX's, CD5s and CD3s that I have used this normally kicks in around 5 mm before the door is fully closed and is perfectly normal behaviour.

I have noticed the same thing as you and appreciate garyi's input explaining this effect.

Another one which happens occasionally on my CDX2 is probably due to a little lack of care on my part. When loading the odd CD as it spins up after door closure there is a "clanking "sound which clearly comes from the edges of the CD clouting the side of the depression in the casting.
No problem follows when playing the CD so I put it down to poor centering of the mag puck on my part which centers up by it'self when the CD first spins up.
Reloading the same CD more carefully takes care of it confirming it is my hamfistedness, but it highlights how tight a fit the CD is in it's depression in the casting.

Mike

The folded ribbon cable has to move back and forth as the transport drawer is opened and closed.

This may have become 'hung-up' on something internally. It happened to my friend's nearly new CD5.

Take it to your dealer. (Don't forget the transit screws)

Mike -

When I first had my CD5 there was a very load 'clunk' just before the door was fully cloed. I was told that this is perfectly normal as is noted by Gary above. The 'clunk' has become less agressive the more I have used the player. I was asked by Naim to check that the ribbon was on it's normal place and did not appear to be distressed and in my case there was no problem.

Well thanks for the info. so far. Good to see that we all understand "clunk"!

Having read your posts I should add the following in response:

  • My CDX2 started out quietly and never went "clunk" until recently. There was always a little magnetic pull but then you'd rather hope there was really before CDs go spinning off into goodness knows where!

  • My "clunk" starts a good deal further out than 5mm (in relative terms).

  • I'm the most paranoid puck operator you have ever met.All in this household have learnt the mantra "Don't **** with the puck" and I don't associate anything I do with the puck as relating to the "clunk". There is a different kick as the CD starts to spin.

  • I suspect that the ribbon cable could be the culprit here so thanks for that.

  • I have a very sensible, minor form of upgraditis which will not see me ever buy a toploader unless it's a washing machine (more flat earth philosophy) unless I inherit large wads of cash from you all - now!!! I'm afraid it's XPS2 and then new amplification to replace my ancient Pioneer A400 (which actually works amazingly well other than for the fact that I know there's a lot more to come from the CDX2.

Thanks again.

One other thing to check is the draw is not spoiling the enclosure, rarely the door does not fit the gap correctly and hits the top as it goes in.

The door is adjustable by your dealer and if this is the problem should be checked out as its coupling the door to the body which kind of detracts from the suspension.

Just see how the door fits in the gap.

Whatever you believe, there is more than a grain of truth in this story.

A very small grain then. A dealer here in Stockholm had one of those. He confirmed it was very, very good for the money it cost but said it was no match for a middle of the range Sugden combo for example. To claim it would be better than 52/135's is a bit silly IMO. I listened to it a bit in the shop but it's a long time ago so cannot comment about how it sounded.
