Facebook. How do I stop "farmville" etc related messages?
Posted by: Dungassin on 27 April 2010
I subscribe to facebook mainly so I can look at photos/videos posted there of my grandkids, and occasionally post some of my own.
My home page keeps showing me updates on "my friends" performance on games such as "Farmville". I managed to stop all such messages about "Mafia Wars", but how do I stop this "farmville" nonsense?

Solved it. You drag your cursor to the right of the offending post, an icon called "hide" appears ...
Why do they have to hide the bloody "hide icon?

I think then that this will hide all future posts from that person.

I just hid facebook, it's so crap it's not worth bothering with.

It's actually a great means of communication for a small number of non technical people who are far apart. Being able to chat, share photos etc in a simple environment has meant I can now easily keep in close touch with my US family and it's been wonderful for me. You have to learn how to cut out the nonsense, and be quite ruthless in your selection of friends though.
Use it sensibly and it's fantastic tool.

I think that's correct. I had a particular friend at one point who flooded my wall with shite. I hid her and ended up deleting her. I'm on Facebook purely so I can keep in touch with a small number of close family members. Anything that interferes gets chopped.
Edit - I see the hide function now lets you choose whether you want to hide the friend or application. Looks like they're listening to their users.

The C.E.O. made 3 Billion last year..
"Small number of non tech people."
At last count, there are OVER 400 Million active members.

Please read my post carefully before stating the bleeding obvious. The idea of having hundreds of people telling me every bit of trivia that happened to them today is complete anathema to me. However it is a superb means of communication between me and a few (i.e. a small number of) non technical second cousins in New York.

Tom-
A little testy?
I was piggy backing on to your post with a couple facts.
Don't have a conniption.

If you hit the hide button on one of the offending posts it will (usually) give you the option to hide the post or the application. Given the number of these things kicking around the FB world this seems to be something that you need to do reasonably often but it generally works.

Thanks for the tip. I can now keep up with my friends without reading horoscopes/mafia wars/dungeons & dragons etc etc.

That's exactly what I did. I still get the general posts from the people involved, but not the game progress info.
I, along with (I suspect), many others just use facebook to keep in touch/chat (occasionally) with family and friends. Nice way of sharing photos and videos of the grandkids!

keeping in touch with friends and family, sharing photos... Can someone tell me what it offers above e-mails and Skype then?
Posted on: 28 April 2010 by TomK
First of all I don't have Skype and neither do any of my family.
Facebook keeps it all together in a relatively non technical environment. The photos are all there, stored for all the family to see whenever they want, sending messages and chat can be done easily from within the same environment. It does nothing that can't be done other ways but it's all in one place and easy to use, and there's the feeling of a little community of friends too.
If it's not for you then don't use it. Simples.

I find facebook woeful for hosting photos. You can do all you describe in a much less instrusive manner using Flickr. Set your account to limited access so only those you authorise can see your photos. Posting comments and sending messages are possible without that whole "wall" garbage and confusing interface that is Facebook. Flickr doesn't do IM but there are plenty of free apps for that (Skype?).

Winky,
Each to his own. My cousins were already set up on Facebook when I met them all for the first time in years last year and it was an ideal way of continuing to keep in touch. They're not interested in using Flickr or Picturetrail for photos, Messenger or something similar for chat, something else for something else, etc etc. Facebook does it all for them.
I'm by no means saying Facebook's the most wonderful tool ever, far from it. I'm merely pointing out that it does exactly what some people want. It's not the great evil some people here would have you believe.

Agree, each to his own. I have been on Flickr for years and am very familiar with it. If I spent any time on facebook, I might hate it less, but I simply can't find my way around it, let alone usefully host nay photographs.

Winky,
We're posting old family snaps and reminiscences, not high art. We do use regular emails as well but there have been odd occasions when discretion has been required and Facebook has been able to provide a bit more of that than open emails.
