I have sinned

I recently was faced with the decision to renew my Stereophile subscription. I did. Please don't ban me from the forum.

Let me explain. I completely dismiss most of the tripe contained in the reviews. (One of the reviewers consistently writes that he listens at levels topping 100 decibels. Is he deaf?) I do read it to laugh at the reviews and to keep abreast of general goings on. Occasionally there is a good music review (that's how I found Renee Rosnes' music). I just had to keep going with the subscription. Hey, Stereophile is how I first learned about Naim, so it's not all bad.

Ah I feel better. Confession is good.

I haven't read it in about 7 or 8 years... the same amount of time I've had my Naim gear! I too first heard of Naim through Stereophile as well, so I guess it served its purpose.

Todd,

Everyone needs humor in his/her life.

It's always been relatively cheap for US subscribers but now the worldwide rate is $30 for a year, hardly expensive.

I find Sam Tellig one of the most entertaining audio writers I have read , and he loves the music .Its worth the money for some of his excellent Naxos reccomendations.

Got to agree with that, but sometimes he might be too enthusiastic about Musical Fidelity.

Michael Fremer is always worth reading too ,as a died in the wool Vinophile I find a lot to agree with him about .

Never read anything about wine in his column, but still an entertaining read. He has lauded both the CDX and the CD5, and was enthusiastic about the Stageline.

As for the rest well as you say it is patchy but always better written and more intelligently expressed than any English magazine . As a Brit myself it is slightly sad to have to admit that all the most intelligent mags are American.

We even dumbed down "the Gramophone " ,oh sad country .

HiFi Plus is fine mag, it reminds me in someways of the way the Absolute Sound used to be in the Eighties, I especially like HiFi pluses photography. The articles are well written too, and there's not to much slang. Stereophile is of course edited by John Atkinson, maybe he remembers the grammar lessons he had at school wink , I'm just going through stacks of (1997-2000) of back issues before I ditch them. If somebody wishes to collect them from me they can have them.
