New Apple TV

Posted by: matpip on 05 September 2010

Hi everybody!
I just saw that Apple released a new apple tv, which is basically a simple streamer with optical digi out...Someone already tested it, SQ wise? paired with an iphone or ipad it could be a nice alternative to sonos/squeezebox...

I don't think Apple are actually selling them for another 4 weeks...

I'm using the previous version, and obtaining some pretty honest results on the Naim DAC.

It will shrink down your hires files to plain Apple lossless, but it runs everything else like a charm under iTunes, including web radio.

Bye.

The issue (I guess for some) with the current ATV is that it cannot output hires. I don't suppose the new one will be any different.

yeap, I don't think it can handle hires...at least it is not specified on apple website.

If it could run BBC iPlayer then I'd want one, but it can't so it is not for me.

Well it might be able to with Airfoil. Airfoil works brilliantly with my Macbook & Airport Express.

Yes it would. Sound only though.

You can hack the current ATV to get iPlayer to work. No doubt the new ATV will get hacked at some stage too.

If you can afford about £120, the Sony BDPS 370 Blu Ray DVD player will sit on your network and runs BBC iPlayer very nicely (as well as Lovefilm streamed movies) - and it's a decent Blu-Ray player, with optical and s/pdif digital outs .. there's even a free iPhone remote control app. No fraim, no power supply, no mains cable to upgrade either!

The current ATV does BBC iplayer including hidef just fine.

it can also pull from any FTP or SAMBA source practically any video and audio format currently available, and all that can be controlled with the remote or web interface.

Thanks - will it work wirelessly as my wired network is only in my office - blue-ray plus iPlayer is quite appealing.

I didn't know that - I couldn't find it mentioned anywhere - that is really the only function I'd be looking from the ATV.

ROFT - you have to buy a dongle, about £60 (robbery) iirc. Works very well though. Sony seem to be getting into streaming in a big way - check out Qriocity. I forgot to mention the BluRay is also a upnp renderer (tho not flac) so you can stream music to it.

ROTF, it does require a tadge of geekery. Which may or may not put you off.

Download the software here:

http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/

Put it on a usb stick, Then you stick that int he back of the ATV and restart.

Once done you will have your normal fully functional ATV plus a new option for XBMC, this is a programme that runs on the ATV and happily excepts remote commands from the apple remote.

I don't think "unofficial" iPlayer plugins (inc. XBMC or Plex) work any more. Haven't BBC blocked all except real Flash? i.e. standard web browser.

Thanks for the info - I did read something about iPlayer content was not licensed for a set top box, but assume this does not apply to the Sony so that looks a good route for me plus I get Blu-Ray as a bonus.

I liked the look of the ATV and I'm happy to hack it, but would prefer a device that worked out the box if possible.

Thanks... I'll have to try it again on Plex then...

Not liking plex right now Winker

Also iplayer on plex is so far as I can tell basically just a hack to get the website on screen, the one on XBMC (you need the latest dharma build and get iplayer from here http://code.google.com/p/xbmc-iplayerv2/ ) this runs properly, i.e. a proper plugin, with settings for what quality stream you want etc.

Plex is not hitting the spot for me, they have let the core video rendering suffer whilst they worked on the library. I understand they wanted to get the library stuff done, but long and short is for the purpose of media playback, XBMC wins hands down right now

ROTF in the true sense of the word you are hacking the ATV. On the other hand its really easy to do, once the software is on your memery stick you simply wack it in the ATV, about 30 seconds later its all done. Thats the extent of the hacking.

After that you just need to install the bbc iplayer plugin (linked above) by shhing into the ATV and putting the zip file where you can navigate to it on the ATV menus. I did it no bother, which basically means anyone can. The upshot is iPlayer in the bedroom and sitting room. Honestly I have not watched 'live' BBC in a long time.
