2 new(ish) albums that i'm listening to at the moment, both female singer / songwriters and both very good:

abraham - blue for the most

pina - quick look

abraham sounds something like a mix of joni mitchell and zero 7, but sounds very fresh at the same time.

the pina album is great. a whole mixture of sounds, from american folkie guitar to native american vocal styles. she's got quite a dry husky voice, which seems to go really well with the guitar style. abraham has a richer, more mellow voice.

cheers

No female singer songwriters for me this week Matt wink

This is the week that was.....

the prayer boat - polichelle. It's taken me 2 months to pronounce "polichelle" correctly! If you like Lampchop I'm sure the beauty of this album will appeal.

lampchop - is a woman. Speak of the devil.

gotan project - la revancha del tango. Come on...just buy it for the title!

boards of canada - music has the right to children. For those de-stressing moments...of and good at work too!

johnny cash and willie nelson - VH1 storytellers. Worth it for the banter in between songs!

Enjoy the week's tunes folks. Jay

Two newcomers this week, African tinged

Assembly -Hukwe Zawose and Michael Brook. Bit hard work in places but passages are excellent. may well be a grower.

Rokia Traore- mellow acoustic backing to a fine voice. No standout tracks but great atmosphere.

Nigel, the very same. Did not realise she had done any others actually.

I have loads of African stuff but very few with lead female vocalists that I have really enjoyed.

Have you tried Ballake Sissoke-Deli? Has a very similar feel to the Rokia Traore with a simple acoustic instrumental backing (but a male singer).

Also bought the new Seif Keita-'Mouffou' a few weeks back-it is extremely good-I prefer it to anything he has done before (including Soro).

Reckon it may be time to start a thread on African music myself- a list of your top 5 African CD's etc. Anyone game?
