Exporting from HDX
Posted by: andrew jameson on 17 April 2009
Couple of quick questions ...
1. Can you export from an HDX, say to a USB stick? I've had a brief scan of the manual and it's not obvious that you can
2. Are there any significant changes between SP8 and SP9 or is it just minor bug tweaks
Thanks
Andrew

1) I think the answer is no, or at least, I've never found a way. However, my curiosity is piqued by the thread mentioning the HiFi Critic review, where the reviewer allegedly compared files ripped with the HDX to files ripped with other software, so that implies they found a way to 'get at' the HDX files.
I suppose this will be resolved in the next software release which will apparently allow ripping to external media?
2) Dunno. I'm still on SP8 and it seems to work OK
Cheers

You will be able to export from the HDX with the software release scheduled for next month.
To compare:
1. Rip to the HDX
2. Rip same material using another program and transfer to USB stick. Place USB stick into HDX and access files via HDX software. Music is played through HDX.
This is how he compared the files HDX ripped files vs. files played through the HDX but made with other ripping software.

Hi Gary, will the software release mean my HDX will have to go back to the dealer again or will I be able to download it myself?

The ability to import files to the HDX would be more useful to me.

Ah, that makes sense. So by keeping the HDX-ripped file inside the unit, away from all the worldly contamination, explains why that file sounded better
nocker - from past experience, Naim don't seem to like downloads - you'll have to ask your dealer for a CDROM. But the unit doesn't have to go back

The HDX has a Digital-Out right?
That would be another easy way to "get the rip out of the HDX", not physically of course, but you could compare rips this way right?

I think you would have to re-rip if you didn't have a NAS, and wanted the files on the HDX hard drive(s).

Guys, I may have missed this way back, but what currently happens when you fill the current onboard 400Gb ? Does it start over writing previous content or simply stop working ?!
Anyone filled the 400Gb yet and in this situation ?

Before ripping the HDX looks for "Free Space" on the HDD. If there is none it will not rip an new album.

It is possible to see and "copy" the files in The hdx or ns0xxx. It shows up on Your network as a "shared drive". You will then need the password and user name
It is read only
Contact your local retailer distributer for info

Only for another few weeks.

What is the user name and password my computer keeps asking for when it sees the HDX?

We provide the update to dealers as either a CD ROM or as a download but leave it to the dealers discretion as to whether they provide the customer with the update disc or whether they perform the update themselves for the customer as it is possible to "brick" a machine if the update process is not followed carefully which then becomes the dealers issue to sort out.

The username and password for the HDX share should not be posted on a public forum.

We do not support the importing of files into the HDX - however any files not generated by the HDX can be played from an external device (USB stick, NAS drive, network share etc.) as long as they are a supported file format.

As has been mentioned on here it is possible for a Naim distributor to copy the music from an HDX onto an external store (NAS) and the music then deleted from the HDX which frees up space for further ripping.
The next major software update (being tested in house at the moment) supports ripping to an external NAS device and so provides for additional storage that way.

Perfectly reasonable - we do the same with our instrumentation. I prefer the more orderly approach otherwise it can be a real ballache.
While we have your attention Phil, I've got a few issues/suggestions for the DTC and HDX in general. Is it best to clutter up this forum or is there a preferred email address at HQ?
Cheers

Incidentally, on the subject of the HIFICRITIC journo's experiment, he had managed to copy the HDX file onto the USB stick along with the other files. so all the rips were listened to with the USB stick as source.

Great.... $8500 and you need to schedule an appointment with a dealer?? Do you have to lug it down to the store? Or does $8500 buy you a home visit everytime you'd like to do this?
Really strange this product is. Luckily it sounds absolutely amazing, allegedly.

Methinks piracy is the issue–different rules on the other side of the pond.
Posted on: 22 April 2009 by pcstockton
aha! sorry for the misunderstanding.
Perhaps a US version of the HDX can be released at some point?

I'm amazed if that's the reason ! How come I don't have to take my computer back to the dealer when I fill the HD, or my iPod, or my phone, or my external Raid drives, or my AppleTV....
No, I think the reason is far more Naim-esq...
I really hope this awaited (wasn't it supposed to be out by now?) software update irons out some of the strange quirks of the HDX for current owners and makes the device more attractive to potential ones - like me.

I've already run out of space. Waiting for next version of software.
