Goldberg variations and on from Elgar...
Posted by: Alan Miller on 09 March 2006
I hope this hasn't been brought up many times already and so exasperates many but could anyone confirm if the piece of music playing over the sequence for Radio 3 Christmas music season was the Goldberg variations? I realise that there have been many "discussions" over which version is best but i am approaching this as an almost complete novice...

Also, I think my wife is beginning to pull her hair out at my limited classical repertoire at home as a music graduate and so i was wondering if anyone could possibly suggest some pieces to broaden my current listening... As a guide so far I have Elgar Cello concerto, du pre[sp?] and Barber's school for scandal which i listen to a lot. I have also been listening to Taverner Protecting Veil with Benjamin Britten's cello concerto. I have to confess to having a bti of a dislike for the smaller strings which i attribute to playing the trumpet a long time ago...but am more than willing to give pieces a listen. I remember hearing a snippet [I think from Naim label] of a piece called the devils trill and enjoying that. I'm sorry if this all comes across as garbled but at the minute my knowledge is rather limited. I'm willing to give most things a go though so please bear with me..

I don't remember the advert, but I seem to remember that the BBC were playing the very first piece from Bach's Well-Tempered Klavier recently to promote something or other.
As to other music, it would be difficult to dislike Mozart's piano concertos or Beethoven's symphonies, but have a look at some of the threads here called "First Piano Concertos", etc.

Alan,
As far as broadening your classical listening, may I suggest, as Graham does, Fredrik's excellent 'first' threads (there's a piano one, a concertos one, a symphonies one, a choral one, and I just started an opera one the other day). Also, my mozart thread, a few down this page and this thread (and particularly my post four from the bottom of the first page):
http://forums.naim-audio.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/380...2941996/r/1222941996As always, I'll say that a good starting point is the excellent Mackerras/RLPO cycle of Beethoven symphonies - fantastic performances and bargain price to boot.

cheers, have found a few pointers there and will have a looky when I've got a bit more time than my lunch break... As for the advert if i remember it correctly it had a woman walking through a forest in what i suppose was meant to be moonlight carrying her shopping. I'll be sure to add a couple to my future purchases list. ttfn

Hi Alan,
Welcome to the forum. You will find much good musical information here. I believe that the "Devil's Trill" you refer to must be the Sonata for Violin by Tartini. You would be hard pressed to do better than Anne-Sophie Mutter's
version with the Trondheim Soloists. The headliner for the CD is her most recent version of Vivaldi's Four Seasons, which is very spirited, and one I like very well, though it may not be my favorite version. Everyone's collection must have the Four Seasons. There also was a good thread started by Aric several months ago seeking classical music recommendations. You could do a search on his name. As Tam mentioned, Fredrick's postings always are well thought out, and Tam knows a thing or two about classical music as well.
As I have posted before, you should go right out and buy all the Mozart piano sonata CDs recorded by Mitsuko Uchida that your local music emporium has in stock. Then, after that, order the ones that they do not have.

Oops, Tam's link above is to Aric's thread I referenced.

Hi Basil!
I have that record, but, if you like Vivaldi, my humble suggest is to get this recording wich is more better at my ears:
I've found Mutter a bit too much tech.
The same thing i've felt about Hilary Hahn's Bach Concertos.

Hi Gianluigi,
That was more of a reaction to the cover photo!
I have far too many Four Seasons already!
When I have more time, I'll list them.
I need a cold shower!!!!!!

She's pretty good and pretty pretty... wasted on Mr Previn in more ways than one!

Why not Andre Previn? Musical equals, certainly. I read an interview in one of the audiophile rags a while back and there is an obvious bond that transcends their age differences. Still, he is one lucky b**tard!

This set is fantastic (as I've said before) and Norman is quite right to recommend it - I don't think I've heard Mozart's solo piano music played anything close to as well anywhere else. The five discs for under £20 on amazon (bargain at twice the price):

I suspect that Andrew Preview is hung like a donkey, After all, alongside early conquests like Dory, he's been married to Mia Farrow and is now keeping Anne-Sophie warm at nights. (And there must be others.)
So what do these gorgeous young women see in the old goat?

One wonders. He's rich but so is she... I seem to remember reading she gets ~ £40,000 a gig so it MUST be his nob she's after!
