Linn Sara Nine?

Posted by: Anders on 22 October 2003

Hi,

1. What is your opinions regarding Linn Sara 9's? How do they compare with Linn Kan II's? Possible to drive them with Naim CDI/Nait2?

2. Anything particular to look for?

3. What is a resonable price for a late pair in aformosia including stands in good condition?

Regards

the sara and sara9 were very hard to drive well and you need a 250 at least for decent volume levels i have had both of the models over the years and think the kan is a better speaker overall makeing the sara sound quite bland in comparison

Hi Guys

I do have a pair of Sara 9's complete with original stands, in need of a new home.

As I have now recently upgraded to SL2's they need to move to someone who can appreciate their remarkable qualities.

Any ideas?

Hi all,

It seems like these pairs of Sara are "Sara", not "9", with serial numbers 18xxx. They have a white cap in the middle of the woofer unit.

It seems I definately need to listen to them with my system before a potential purchase! For your information, I currently use late KanII (Kustone) which I love!

Would a fair price be in the range of GBP 200-300 including original stands?

Regards

I had Saras years ago. They can sound great (an active pair were one of the best systems i've ever heard) but my experience of them at home was of a slow and intolerably coloured speaker. I sold them and replaced them with Kans, which IMHO are a far far better speaker once you get beyond the obvious deficiences in scale and bass extension (the only areas where the Sara bettered them, albeit with a very coloured bottom end). IMHO Saras need a 250 minimum in order to get them sounding anywhere near their best.

However, all that must be tempered by the fact that they're now relatively cheap s/h......but so are SBLs, which are better than both IMHO.

Five generations of Sara I can remember.

1. Cabinet has 'flat' square front edges.
2. Cabinet has rounded front edges. Horizontal entry XLR.
3. Vertical entry XLR
4. 4mm sockets.
5. Sara 9, 4mm sockets, (biwireable?)

'3' would date from about 1983, to put things in context, 4 from a couple of years later. Sara 9 was late 80s. A job done by the same Australian chap who then designed the Kaber, which became the Sara replacement. 1, 2, 3 at least probably have the off-white cap over the centre of the woofer.
