The Insanity of Naim Nostalgia- What is it about those old boxes?

Posted by: bec143 on 27 November 2002

After a year of forum watching, I'm wondering what it is about Naim boxes that lead folks to argue bitterly about the relative merits of outdated kit, and the inherent inferiority of anything new? After all, at the heart of all audio equipment is the electronics, and the fact is, electronics improve at a remarkable rate.

For example, very few of us wax poetic over our 13 inch 1968 black and white TV compared with our current 48 inch plasma monitor, but folks here almost come to blows defending their 20 year old preamp over something more current.

It can't simply be about the money invested. Many of us spent a relatively large sum on our first computer in 1987, but who would prefer their IBM XT or Apple IIc to their current PC?

So why are so many Naimophiles entrenched in the idea that the new equipment won't or can't be better then what has been made for 20 years?

The main reason is cost.

I have a recently serviced 32.5 pre amp and it is probably worth around £225.00ish.

It is a superb amp, costs bugger all and is better than the majority of the Japanese black boxes.

Most of us agree that the upgrade route makes sense, but you cannot beat an old amp for value for money.
