iPOD problem

Hello All,

I am the reasonably proud owner of a 20 Gb ipod - the 'standard' size type? About 2 years old...

Apart from the now non-existent battery life and scratch covered case it is a wonderful thing... except

When I transfer songs from CD on my PC, in many instances, especially in quiet sections of a song, I get this incessant crackling noise, even when playing direct from the CD on itunes. This makes listening to about 15% of songs unbearable. I transfer to PC at 128 bits (or whatever they are) and have also ticked the special box under the options menu for people who have trouble with music quality transfer. This appears to do nothing.

What to do?

On reflection, make that 16.5%

Did we not have someone else with the self same problem. However he discovered the same issue with an iRiver as well, i.e a PC problem.

As for the battery have a quick look on ebay, its not difficult to change and long life ones are about 30 quid.

A PC problem?

The thing is if I play a CD through say my beloved 'Winamp' (with 'Whitecap' plugin visualisation which is just wonderful) or Windows Media Player then the crackling is not there.

Is it possible to donwload the music direct from the CD onto the PC using another program and then get iTunes to encode it in AAC format from there?

I'd recommend trying EAC as your ripper preferably EAC with Lame VBR this gives very good sounding compromise between narrow mp3 codecs and the rather bulky lossless ones. I do get the odd crackle but its usually from copycoded cds eg Zero7

Dave do a search I am positive someone had the same problem.

Anyhow here are a few things to check.

That the ipod does not have some super EQ setting.
Try plying music direct from iTunes does that cause crackling?

If no then suspect the lead to the iPod. I had one go bad which would cause random Mac crashes.

There is not a lot in the iPod that can go wrong in this reagrd. However use one of the millions of apps out there to import a CD as anything other than WAV. Simply drag the imported files into itunes.

Put these onto the iPod and see how they play.

Assuming that you get the cracking problem solved, I'd recommend tryingthese peoplefor a replacement battery.

For €35 I got a high-capacity battery for my 1st gen ipod, battery life is now 18 hours. Fitting required a deep breath before using the (supplied) tools to open the case but after that it was a doddle.

I had this "crackle" problem, and in my case it proved digital errors due to an old CD drive in the PC having reading problems. Nothing to do with the ipod/itunes at all. Changed to a modern Sony CDR device and the problem was solved.
