Uniti and MacBook as a server

Posted by: Zdenek Zapletal on 17 September 2009

Hi!
I just got my Uniti. It is better than I ever imagined it would be. It is a useful, practical, and modern product. It immediatly recognized my music server (all FLAC). However I cannot get it to see my Apple MacBook itunes collection nor its additional hard drive.. Does anyone know hoe to do this... All my sharing preferences are set to sharing the above folders and I tried the unity wirelessly and also ethernet hard wired...
thank you
Tristan

I suspect that it doesn't recognise your iTunes music because you've got them in an unsupported format (ALAC or AIFF). What UPnP server are you running on your MacBook?

Hi Tristen.

Itunes does not broadcast on UPNP thats why the uniti cannot see it.

There are plenty of options:
XBMC, this is a fully fledged media suite and a bit overkill simply to get UPNP but it is free.
Allegro, works well, costs money
Twonky, a bit of a shit interface and support is non existent, costs money, when it works its fine
Playback, good but new in development
Eyeconnect, by far the best looking for mac, but I have had nothing but issues getting it to work, so gave up, you might have more luck.

If you wish to control the uniti from your mac book (oh yes you can!) then download Songbook.

thank you for the replies....
All the files are FLAC of aiff...
I did not know that I needed an additional program to make the powerbook "visible". I will domwload it this pm and hopefully it will work out.
Thanks for all your help

I can see this happening more and more....

A good idea may be for Naim to bundle a hybrid disc with a Mac/PC UPNP application, even if a basic or lite version, at least to get users, who don't happen to know this stuff naturally, up and running until they explore more options (should they want to)...?

Steve.

With all due respect, isn't this (making people aware they need a UPnP server) what dealers should be doing? Part do the reason for dealer markup compared with online sales is because they SHOULD be offering this kind of support.

And, with respect, as I have argued and explained before, not ALL end Naim users enjoy the benefits of great dealership and support....There's a massive presumption around the forum that everyone is within striking distance of great dealers like Cymbiosis/Tom Tom/Signals et al where this sort of support would be natural.....However, not all are, believe me.....I've just spent 5 years in Thailand, and the Naim distributor/sole dealer was woeful to say the least - I was fortunate to be in the position to often get on a plane, be back in the UK and go to Leicester, but not all can....

As audio - and Naim - moves more and more into networking and computers, this is all going to come up more and more, no doubt.....

I am in consideration of a website much like my sbl one for a basic set up guide and tried apps, primarily from a mac perspective, would there be interest in this?

Fantastic idea Gary, IMHO...

I'll see what I can come up with.

Sounds like a plan.

Gary,

what a great idea! I think I visited your SBL site when I was close to buying a pair. You saved me!!!!

Would you mind also at least touching base on the PC side of things? Possibly offering one method for those who dont Mac?

thanks,
Patrick

I'll try but this involves booting into windows on my mac, and this usually upsets me greatly.

I hear you there Garyi. At my local Mac dealer and their geek-tacular service department, a few of the very pale techies insisted they could get me running Foobar, and EAC on a MAC. They did "boot camp" as well as some other longer method, and it crashed 4 different Macs they tried it on.

It made them so upset they keep trying for weeks after I left. The techs called me with updates, they were REALLY into getting it to work. They never could.

EAC was a disaster. Foobar would install but crashed/froze the Mac when you tried to run it.

I gave them a few other bits of software to try, that I use often. Tag and Rename, Directory Lister Pro, an Album Art Downloader, etc.... The art program requires a NET framework or something... that was a no go. the others crashed the system or simply wouldn't install.

Not one of the programs I use will run on a Mac in any case of it running Windows.

It was pretty funny, and one of them owes me $20. He said he could get Foobar running and decoding FLACs easily. That is why he tried so many different Macs in the back of the store.

Anyway..... if I was a Mac'er I would bother with it either.

In the final analysis, I guess for those running a PC with Windows, UPnP is quite easy, so no need for a website to help.

I didn't need a website to get upnp on a mac either, but some people are not typing away on the interweb everyday are they?

Funny thing about foobar is I installed it on my imac and ran it for a while, about a year ago when I seem to remember us having yet another argument about it. It installed and ran just fine.

Strange.... these guys are seriously the tops when it comes to Macs. If anyone could do it I figured they would.

Garyi, thank you for your advice! I downloaded the XBMC and I can now stream from my mac... I still have to figure out how to create libraries so that they are recognized by the uniti and also how to get my Time Capsule to be a server... but at least it works. thanks again

Your TimeCapsule won't work as a server direct to your NaimUnity. You need a NAS which offers UPnP. Examples of suitable NAS include NetGear ReadyNAS, most from Buffalo and QNAP and Thecus ranges.

There is nothing specific to a time capsule that will ever let it be a server. Your best bet right now is to use it for your music library and simply link to it.

Take my set up for example. i use itunes on a mini simply to import music and organise it for me, this music is imported onto a NAS. The nas has software on it to catalog the music and share it out over the network to other itunes libraries, and devices that are compatible.

For you, the imte capsule will not allow any programmes to run on it, you can thank aplpe for that so you will have to use it as a traditional 'harddrive' Which is fine.

Just FYI, on your computer mount the time capsule then goto system preferences and users and login items, click the plus button and navigate to the mounted time capsule and click ok.

Now when ever you start up the mac it will automatically mount the volume for you, which is handy for things such as itunes.
