Request to any Barbican Estate residents

Posted by: lightning canadian on 15 November 2009

I'm working on an architectural project on the Barbican Estate and have amassed a wealth of material, most of which (unsurprisingly) relates to the exterior. It's proving much more difficult to locate photography of the internal architecture, which is frustrating as I want to explore the significance and impact of the architects' renowned attention to detail in the interior spaces.

I'm particularly interested in the common interior spaces such as access corridors, lifts, lift lobbies and the famous kitchens and bathrooms.

If any of you fine people are in the fortunate position to be able to help me, I'd be extraordinarily grateful!

Is there a housing association you could contact?

So far as I know, City Of London still own the site/freehold so perhaps they'll have an office that could help http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporation

Barbican Living website might have some useful background

Barbican Talk forum may help find you a friendly resident who'll show you around

Good luck, it's a fascinating place and I'd love to find out more about it myself. Wouldn't mind living there if I ever find myself having to live and work in London.

yeah, that's a really nice looking project. I would certainly be interested if I had the cash but I'm in sunny SoCal. I like modern but my apartment is late 40s and has nice things like built in bookshelves, something you don't get in todays apartments, but then I only have 1 electrical outlet to a wall if that. They never thought someone would need 6 for their stereo equipment.....

And cash is something you'd need in large quantity - how about a one-room apartment for £268,000?

Is the sound insulation sound enough for a system that will do justice to the purchase price?

Thanks for the responses guys. I think the thread Munch is talking about was mine! Smile I'm familiar with Barbican Living but I'll take on board the suggestion of contacting the Barbican Estate next time I'm in London. My partner is sick to the back teeth of being dragged around London modernist landmarks. Ted Cullinan's place in Camden Mews anyone?!
