Speaker cable for a "brighter" midrange ?

Posted by: Dawie on 25 August 2003

Hi, I need some guidance and advice please ?

The system:
CDX2
Nac 92R (NAC 282 ordered !)
Hi-Cap
2 x NAP250
Castle Howard S3 speakers (NAC A5 cable)
REL Storm sub

I dearly love this setup !! With only one minor issue:

At normal listening volume levels the sound, and perhaps more the midrange than anyhting else, sounds restrained and almost "dark" or slow. At higher levels it all comes alive and all is well. This might be as much a function/relsut of the Howards as anything else.

The question is how do I "brighten or speed up" the sound ?

A change in speaker cable with more silver content has been one suggestion. With the REL, I can afford to sarcifice some bass thru the speakers.

Any comments, advice or suggestions much appreciated ! Including "keep the volume up" (I can then print and prove it to her....)

Try DNM Reson. It's cheap (like A5) and has a slightly brighter, tighter, cleaner sound with slightly less bass. It's subjectively faster sounding. It's also easy to route.

You may be best off to wait for your 282 though, before changing the cables out, otherwise you could end up chasing the wrong fox.
A friend of mine has Castle Howards and they always sound a bit laid back at low volumes, but that could be down to the Audiolab 8000 rather than the speakers.
QED Silver Anniversary is another cable which you might consider if the A5 still doesn't do it for you. A5 certainly sounded dire with my MA R352s. Chord Rumour has good mid-range, but seems to lose the plot with the timing.

Did your system sound like this prior to the CDX2? It seems what you are describing are my general impressions of the player.
It may perhaps be less expensive to try swapping interconnects first, and I don't think a new preamp is going to address your complaint if it's the player you're hearing.
