Their Finest Hour

Posted by: GraemeH on 18 November 2007

This phrase has cropped up alot recently on 'What are you listening to right now?' so I thought I'd try a separate thread.

The rules are simple; One band/orchestra and one LP/CD which represents 'Their finest Hour'...ie.

Rolling Stones: Let it Bleed

It's got to be Piper for me - though I like just about everything they have done.

Nice idea for a thread...

I still say Quadraphenia by The Who (while acknowledging the excellence of Who's Next)

Joni Mitchell - ooh too hard - ok Blue (but an honorable finest 45 mins for Clouds too)

Mozart - Piano concerto nr 20

Let's hope we get some good classical inputs.

Not quite sure how much agreement will be reached here, but here are some nominations:

Van Morisson - Into The Music (closely followed by Moondance)

Led Zep - Impossible!! My personal favourite is III but truly I think their strength was maintaining that finest hours over III, IV, Physical Grafitti and Houses of the Holy. I'm sure Beattles followers would have similar problems choosing one.

Neil Young - Harvest (complimented by this year's release of the Massey Hall concert!).

Stevie Wonder - Innervisions.

Marvyn Gaye - What's Going On.

David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust (closely followed by Hunky Dory).

Eric Clapton - Another Ticket (personal choice!).

Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run (still running!)

REM - Automatic for the People.

Waterboys - This is the Sea.

I'll stop - danger of compiling Mojo's top 100 album list for them!! As with all such lists, ask me tomorrow and I'll give you a different list...Roll Eyes

Grateful Dead The Anthem Of The Sun - I even believe there is one defining moment on this album during Alligator when Mr Garcia's electric guitar creates sounds that I have never heard bettered on that instrument.
