CBR Fireblade or Kawasaki ZX-6RR

I really fancy learning to attain a motorbike license, I am interested in how much it costs these days, and how long it typically takes to be able to ride one of the above.

Thanks in anticipation

Doing a direct access course usually takes a few hundred pounds and in theory would mean that you could get straight on one of the above mentioned bikes as soon as you'd passed. Going straight to a fast sportsbike is probably a bad (even terminal!) idea though, and you'd be better spending time on something tamer first.

I did a decent amount of mileage (12,000+ miles per year) on bikes after passing my test but it was still 3 years before I decided I was ready for a sportsbike. It also took that length of time for the insurance to calm down to a reasonable level as well.

Of the two bikes you mention neither could be regarded as beginners bikes but the Fireblade is considerably the more powerful of the two. The ZX6RR has similar performance to my CBR600 and it's still a very quick bike (0-60mph in just over 3 seconds, 160mph+) so be sure you're ready for that.

If your a first time biker i would recommend setting your sights a little lower to start off with. Steve's advise is spot on! Once youve completed a direct access course if you buy a Honda you will be able to take the option of a Mac course. This is an excellent course an will help you develope further. Experience counts when it comes to the Superbikes, Its a mixture of being able to control all that power and to be able to use it sensibly not only to avoid trouble but also to get yourself out of it!

A similar machine to our Mick's would get yer heart racing some for a beginner, though I'd watch those sharp country bends a tad.

Hi Webke

I would look at getting your licence and then see where you want to be, rather than deciding now.

Off road riding is a great way to learn machine control, either with one of the many schools that are available or with your own dirt bike. In terms of road craft the Institute of Advanced Motoring has a great program of ongoing learning for intermediate as well as experienced riders.

Good luck and welcome to the club.
