Wakonda to LK280 cabling question
Posted by: vicdiaz on 10 July 2002
Hi,
I know this is not the right place to ask for this, but I can find the best answers right here!!!
I just got a s/h Wakonda (my LK1 went dead with the infamous christmas tree syndrome) and I'm trying to find if there is a special way to wire the cabling between the two of them, since the Wakonda is RCA (unbalanced) and the LK280 is XLR (balanced).
Any recommendations???![cool](/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif)

There are two ways of doing what you want.
Firstly, by using XLR to phono adaptors and secondly(a better way) is to make up a lead(or cut the phonos off one end of an existing lead) and solder XLR plugs in their place. If you decide to do this, the wiring connections are printed on the rear of the LK280.
I notice your post is from Puerto Rico, and I just hope the plugs etc are available there,There is a hifi shop in Playa del Inglais(yumbo centre) which should be able to help...Let us know how they compare sonically, as an LK1/Dirak user, I would be interested to know.
Enjoy the sunshine Dave

Hi,
That's the way I have it right now. I'm using Linn's own cables (LK1/LK280 original XLR-XLR with Linn RCA's from XLR-tape cable). It works OK but I thought that I may be missing something since its converting from an unbalanced to a balanced connection?.
Any cable or connector recommendations???

Either contact Linn or a Linn dealer. If there's no luck there, then maybe the Chord Company (www.chord.co.uk) will help (they often make up cables with unusual connectors).

Earlyish Kairns were supplied with a pair of phono to XLR cables. This uses the standard Linn interconnect cable and phonos. These cables are 'handed'.
There is no 'balancing' going on in an electrical sense.
Ideally you get phono/XLR cables from a Linn dealer, otherwise convert Linn phono/phono or construct your own. Linn dealers can supply the plain interconnect cable off the roll.

Vic,
I just opened an rca-xlr adapter. It has these connections.
rca inner - xlr outer
rca outer - xlr other outer and xlr center
This one cost about 10usd. Audiophile grade adaptors are no doubt more expensive.
There was another thread about 6 month ago that explained how the the two active cores work.
cheers

Victor,
Can't be of any help with the cables, but if you still have your LK1, a new memory battery will/should fix the flashing light thingy. It was a very common problem with LK1s.
The battery is located on the back of the front panel (simply remove the outer sleeve to gain access). Its a common part and can be purchased from an electronic supply house. (the part number is located on the back of the battery) The battery is soldered in place, btw....
cheers

Hi,
About 5 years ago I was told by Linn UK to replace some resistors, caps and two IC's. That did the job for a while, also the battery was replaced at that time.
Now I replaced everything again (except for the battery) but didn't work.
Who wants a cheap spare LK1??? (logic board is OK, control board is not, power supply is OK, case is 7/10).
