202 / 200 review in Hi-Fi news

Posted by: Matt Gear on 03 January 2003

Good review of the 202 / 200 in February's HFN. Forget who was reviewing it but thought it to be the best pre / power combo at the price (as long as you're not after a "valve sound".

cheers

In the world of magazine publishing it is 3rd January, so it must be February.

In his second life, Matt works for magazine publishers to implement the "opps" strategy to get unsuspecting Forum readers to buy audio rags.

Just as long as they don't get my address or phone number.

Has checked on the internet before going to buy his next hi-fi mag.

I just wonder why though does the hi-fi world concentrate on the entry levels, wouldn't it be nice to see a review of the more expensive Naim equipment.

I've just spent nearly £1600 on a 202 and Stageline - to have it described as 'entry level' is almost too much to bear big grin

Almost as obscene as Hi fi world recomending the new 202/200 as an alternative to a "cold system" !!

I'm thinking of changing my 102 for a 202 but keep my 180. Do you think they will work good together?

Yes, they will work very well together though probably not much better than with your 102.

Try an 82 or 282 for significant improvements.

Hi Guys, this might sound weird. But do you think the sound of a piece of eqt, in this case 202/200, will change as it runs in. This is my second week of using it.

Yesterday night, I notice that there was hardly any bass. The 202/200 was bass shy. Is it just me?

Silklee--

Naim gear is infamous for requiring long break in times. During break in, the music will experience peaks and valleys.

When I heard a 202/200 combination I would NOT describe it as bass shy (driving Vandersteen 2Ce Signatures). I suspect you've just hit a point in break in; I'd be confident the bass will arrive (or return, as appropriate). I would also add I was impressed--the 202/Hicap/NAPSC/200 was quite a bit better than my 72/Hicap/250.

Enjoy!

Initially, the 202/200 seemed a big improvement over my 92/90. However after a week and 1 day of use, the performance seems to have drop. It sounds very mellow, anemic and bass shy but seems to have lost that little bit of edginess. Lets hope things turn out for the better.

Hang in there

The 202/200 combo is not 'bass shy'. I'd guess that you're hearing better control in the bottom end.

However; I could hear my new 202 - Hicap - 250 going through varying tonal colours, for about 6 to 8 weeks, before it settled down.

Also; when having a listening session; don't place too much emphasis on the first few tracks played.

Kit turned on permanently, still needs about half an hour to reach its potential.

Make sure the room is warm. A cold room will produce a bass light sound.

Actually that was what i noticed also. The highs seems very much rolled off but somehow i was more bothered by the lack of bass.

The worst thing for me is that there is a schedule power blackout at my area for a full 8 hours about 5 days from now.

However this seems to fall in line with what my dealer told me. "no bass, no treble" for 3 months.... Eek

Looks like its time to open a full-fledged Naim Support Group.

Its very simple really.

Your system will take a good six weeks to come up to full speed.

The improvement is not a straight line , it will go up......stay flat....go down ...go down more and then go up. It is a frustrating time but please remember that it sounds pretty good after a few hours, its just that it goes all over the place.

Just lie back and enjoy it.

Yves,

don't worry too much about the power-out.

Some people have said that it's worth powering some Naim stuff down after about a month. When I did it, it seemed to tighten things up quite nicely (which was what I needed at the time).

cheers, Martin

MY 202/200 is running in too. The highs sounded very rolled off for a few weeks. Now it seems to be coming back a little. Must wait ...
