Thanks for that,
They belonged to my Granddad and I found them in a non-descript chocolate box while sorting my late Fathers personal stuff out, no paperwork though, I'll pass them on to my Uncle, he'll appreciate them because he has his Dads other medals and effects.
One looks like a Victory medal? and the other is a Star with blue, red and white ribbon, both look like they've seen a bit of action, probably in my Nannas dolly tub and mangle!
Beano on the buses, what was his brother in-law called, married to Olive?

Copernicus was a sterling example of this. Before he pointed out otherwise, the accepted 'fact' was that the Earth was the centre of the universe. We now know this to be untrue.
What is more interesting (to me) is the framework of thought which gives rise to notions such as the cosmos having a centre.
The notion that the cosmos has a centre is obviously a frame of thought that is associated with the human tendency to posit the centre as being a reflection of ego. The fact that humans experience a centre within their own embodied experience is projected outwards. The universe appears to exist all around US and we are its centre. This is a well known mechanism. Indeed an investigation of language itself shows that all words originated in the pure experience of embodiment. All words derive from the basic ‘primitive’ experience of body and psyche. The post kantian philosopher Ernst Cassirer (a very bright chap indeed), traced the mode of human consciousness through various successive structures or forms of consciousness, each one supplanting the previous when the limitations reached breaking point.
His basic forms are myth, language and the scientific. The Cartesian grid (circa early 17th centuary) was a crucial mathematical tool, which enabled the development of calculus, which in turn enabled the development of physics which in turn offers the prevailing day to day explanation of 'reality'. The Cartesian grid of course has an origin, the centre of the graph, so it is not surprising that classical physics maintained the notion of a centre of the cosmos. After all classical physics treated the cosmos as something which could be subject to a 3D grid so the idea of a centre was natural. Scientific research and theory at the end of the nineteenth century/ beginning 20th century forced science to abandon this idea. When a form of thought reaches its limitations a more subtle one must take its place. However in a certain sense we do still have a notion of a centre for what else is the big bang? Even today scientists are actually very confused about all this.
I believe that along with the erroneous classical view of a centre of the cosmos, humanity, in the west, are deluded into the notion of a creator Being, God, the centre of all beings and the universe itself. This delusion, seems to be tediously resilient to the findings of modern physics, which clearly indicates the impossibility for their being any need for such a being, FOR PHYSICAL LAWS HAVE NO NEED OF SUCH A SUPPORTIVE INTERVENTION. A recent book by an eminent physicist argues that physical laws emerge from a symmetry breaking from nothingness. Now there’s a thought, not quite right but close! Nevertheless there are theologians, like John Polkinhorne (not a very bright chap), who desperately try to argue that quantum physics shows the necessity of God although Quantum theory neither supports not negates Gods existence. How anyone can say God exists as fact is clearly deluded. They cannot discriminate between ‘knowing’ (in the sense of gnosis) and mere belief. In a recent BBC radio4 interview the Archbishop of Canterbury repeatedly replied that he did not know the answers to many of the questions put to him but nonetheless stuck to the position that ‘faith required commitment in the face of the unknown’, or some such drivel. Time after time when questioned by a firm but friendly radio presenter the Archbishop ducked the questions with an air of quiet calm and arrogance. I really think it is time for us to look for religious leaders who actually know something or give up on religion altogether! I’m not saying the Christian religion has nothing to offer, however. The Christian church is very good at organising jumble sales, whist drives and coffee mornings and helps to engender a sense of community but little else of any value in my opinion. In this respect the church has little more to offer than secular institutions like bingo clubs.
Acad von read all about it in Cassirer’s The Philosophy of Symbolic Forms – probably out of print innit*

I can't see you, hear you nor understand a word you're saying and will probably never meet you. Also you have no way of proving to me that what you're writing is not a fraud penned by someone else claiming to be you.
The only scientific, logical conclusion is that you do not exist.

Just got a chat with my temporary neighbours (builders etc doing the house up at present & er, Polish) regarding the dirty rat. Guy says we'll get it, and I told him that in 20 years it was only the second time one had come up the stair (4th floor) and it's now very cold (anybody want to tell me what cold is?).

I tell you what Andy Old Chop! out of all the coppers I've ever known (which is quite a few actually) I've never met one who rambles on as you do in that special "Let's bamboozle the buggers at every juncture with my Auld Blarney" and very decently done too, I must say John.
Fritz Von To please Mr P, I've just recieved a rather naughty 'surprise' letter from the dole people telling me that because of my low income over the last 9 months etc, etc, they've decided to give me a nice fat cheque out of the blue (which is already on my account, cos I just looked). I am naturally delighted, and we are talking 4 figures here Chaps, so as well as getting in brekkies, I've also allowed myself a rather decent bottle of Fizz (Champagne, French VC my favourite) which I'll now (or soon when it's cold enough) douse with copious quantities of freshly squeezed OJ, and get totally pissed.

Fritz,
why thanks for your constructive remarks. If you expect me to knee-jerk react to one side of a story then You have nicely succeeded again in winding me up!
How anyone can make an objective judgement on that issue to which you refer....MMMmm
Re the door staff issue, they are regulated for obvious reasons - you're a clever chap, you work it out.
Finally, what makes your account of a story the correct account, other than your say so? (directed in repect of the thread to which you refer, of course, and nothing personal...)
