Is Firefox safe from malware on a MAC?
Posted by: 555 on 09 June 2009
After updating to Safari 4.0 today I'm unable to log on to a website as it no longer recognises the type.
I've downloaded Firefox to use until the company comes up with a fix.
Are there any risk of malware from doing this?

Have you tried changing the user agent for Safari?

I'm still running the beta version of Safari and it works fine. (Don't think I'll bother with the final version now...)
Prior to that I was using Firefox without problems and I was told by them that know that it's pretty safe.

Your web browser has been detected as: Unknown web browser
That's the error message I get & it's a financial website.
The company told me yesterday that the Safari update means it's no longer compatible with their system.
Fortunately for me Firefox is working fine, so panic over.

To change the Safari user agent, please follow the following steps:
1) Quit your Safari.
2) Open the Terminal - Navigate to your Applications folder, open Utilities, and double click on Terminal.
3) Type the following after the Terminal command prompt:
% defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDevelopMenu 1
If you change your mind later, type the following:
% defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDevelopMenu 0
4) Start your Safari, you will see the "Develop" menu item on the menu bar.
5) Click on the "Develop" menu item, you will see the "User Agent" item which in turn presents a list of the most popular browsers such as IE, Firefox, Opera, etc. Select the agent you want.
Alternatively, you can go to the Preferences and in the "Advanced" section, click "Show Develop" menu in menu bar. But having said that, this option disappears from my Safari 4 overnight. I definitely saw it yesterday, but I do not see it now although I have not done anything. Strange!
That is it. It should fix your problem.

I realize that the Pixies that live in my MacBook have to sort them selves out when I install a new version of Safari but why do I have to restart the computer ? Haven't we got passed that yet ?

Joking aside thanks for your help QTT.
I did try to follow your instructions, but I got lost when entering the prompts.

Please do not type "%" as part of the command. The '%' symbolically represents a 'prompt' in the Unix shell. So
defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDevelopMenu 1
will do.

Thanks QTT , I have made a note of that , however , I'm not sure about the new version yet , all these websites on the coverflow type interface is quite freaky .

BTW, Mac's are not free from or immune to Malware or other security issues but Apple has done a good job of marketing it as such. There are Mac Trojans out there but certainly far less than PC's so you still need to surf safely.
