Electrical upgrades

Can anyone advise the MINIMUM amperage required for a dedicated circuit for my Naim system? I am trying to work with the 200 amp service to the house and I don't have too much expansion capacity without bringing a new service all the way from the street. I have seen different recommendations on various posts.

Ideally, you want a 40 Amp dedicated circuit with your Naim, although it is very seldom that the current goes beyond about 9 or 10 Amps. I've measured this current draw using my NAP 500 / 552 / 555. Its there to provide a wide safety margin but will never come to that. I think its even mentioned in the Naim user manual. If your electrician refuses to go beyond the 200 amp total rating, then I guess you have to bring the figure down to an absolute minimum of 15 Amps.

Put in wiring rated to carry a very high current rating (in the UK 45 amp cable is often used - this would be 90 amp in America which has 1/2 the voltage 120V).

Put a fuse in the breaker box which won't exceed the total 200 amp rating, so you won't need to re-wire back to the street.

cheers, Martin
