Where to Buy CDs in New York?
Posted by: Madrid on 23 April 2003
Hello Fellow Music Fans,
Can anyone recommend a good spot to buy quality jazz, classical or intelligent pop CDs in the Big Apple?
I am aware that Virgin and Tower are there but hope there are even better choices.
Cheers,
Steven

Virgin in Times Square is pretty good. It's big (as you'd imagine) with a cafe sort of thang in the basemement, and seemed to have a reasonable selection of obscure stuff.
Have fun.

Even though you mention it, there's two Tower records next to each other down around 4th street and Broadway, and 383 lafayette.
The one off Broadway has a sale section to the side, with bargains! I bought discs costing £16 here for a few dollars, and several 12" singles long deleted; but that was in '99, so I don't know if they still do vinyl there. Even got a Tori Amos 'R.A.I.N.N.' album and t-shirt for $12.
Failing that try:-
Academy cd, 12 west 18th st.
Academy lp, 77 east 10th
Bleeker Bobs,118 w 3rd mainly rock/punk
House of oldies, 35 Carmine st, Greenwich Village
Jazz Record, 236 w 26th may be just online now, as a lot of E-bay sales
Hope these help. If not you'll find probably the best shop by just walking and walking and walking....I've never felt unsafe wandering around, and have found some great bargains.

Not the best but the cheapest for contemporary is Discorama (Union Sq or Sheridan Sq). Few Cds more than $11 and many less. I usually go in with a list of 10-20 and come out with a handful. They also have great bargain bins.
Don't know about the Jazz/Classical front.
Personally, I hate the big malls of time square - too many tourists. The Barnes and Noble at Lincoln Sq. has a good selection across most genres and is more civilzed than the times square equivalents.
If you are in NYC for a few days and into Jazz, try to catch a session in Smoke on the Upper West. Great place.
BTW, if you are in town tonight Danial Lanois is playing a rare gig.
Cheers, David

I won´t be arriving until May 10th, but thanks for the recommendation all the same.
