Gapless Streaming on the Uniti?
Posted by: Bach_Man on 15 November 2009
One of the very few annoying bits of the Uniti is that it puts gaps between tracks when streaming. At least mine does, with either Twonky or Eyeconnect server on my Mac. This ruins the experience of listening to operas or any other music where the tracks blend together. What appears to happen is that when the end of a track is reached, the Uniti just empties the buffer as the track dies out. Then it accesses the server to buffer the new track, instead of starting to buffer the new track while the previous track is still playing.
Have anyone found a way to remedy this problem or know if Naim is working on it?

Try using Find on 'gapless', there have been a few threads here previously. If I recall correctly uPnP does not support it natively so it can only be worked around with a modified manufacturor specific protocol - I think Linn do this.

Thank you, DaveBk!

The Linn DS stuff plays choral works and opera gaplessly.
Talking of which, and noticing your nick, have you heard their Mathew Passion? It is truly wonderful. (without gaps!)

Linn Records Matthews Passion you mean? Unfortunately, no. But I have some other Linn recordings, like the Handel Messiah, and will probably download more as soon as the Uniti starts supporting hi-rez.
It appears that Linn have done some trickery to make their DS players gapless.

iTunes works seemlessly ... More expensive is not always better or more usable ...

Bach_man - yes, I meant Linn Records Bach Matthews Passion. It is a wonderful version, and particularly good for listening to at home because it is so intimate - just 12 singers. You could always buy the cd! No gaps!

And put into iTunes, so you can play without any gaps at all!

Good Idea, maybe I will try the cd. Hirez isn't worth the price premium IMHO. Cds ususally sound superb on a Naim player, and they are so inexpensive nowadays, classical cds in particular are almost given away for free. So there's really no reason to pay for expensive downloads.
I generally like Bach done with a small ensemble, It just sounds so right.

In iTunes I have the DHM Leonhardt set, and the Dutton Vocalion transfer of the Decca Jacques set [recorded in 1947/8], both on CD and both splendid without gaps because the CDs are too short to play the parts without!

I have an Airport Express hooked into the Uniti as well, and it is brilliant. But I would prefer the system to be totally independent of the Macbook. I am building a server in another room soon, and I want the computer away when I'm listening.

Dear Bach_man,
I understand. For myself, I have moved to a most simple approach. iTunes->sound card->headphone. Sennheiser HD 415 @ £30 or there abouts.
Works a treat, cost are minimal, and the results, splendid. No bling factor though, and not very social, but if I want to be sociable, then I don't bring Bach in to the conversation ...
Best wishes from George

See this thread for more discussion on gaps when streaming:
More streaming questions...It seems at present the problem can't be overcome (VERY ANNOYING!), but that it is on the developer's 'wish list' (Yay! soon please...)
