AV2 and channel dropping

Posted by: webrat11 on 02 December 2003

Can anyone confirm if this is normal please?

I am intermitently loosing audio channels (usual front left or front right) ON MY av2. Also when I "mute" some channels stay live for several seconds (usually left sUrround and right surround) and sometimes don't mute at all. Switching on and off usual solves it but I think THIS is not the usual Naim approach. Has anyone else had this experience.

TIA. Ian

Very silly response this - but have you checked your cable connections? I had some intermittent loss and it came down to the phono plugs being slightly loose in the sockets!

As to the not muting, I haven't really used the mute button so I will need to check on it, few times I have done, it was pretty immediate.

The mute should be immediate. As for the front speakers, this can happen on digital broadcasts when the signal becomes mono.
You should check your setup and visit your dealer with your AV2 to be sure you have the last software version, and it is not corrupted.

Read your other post also and it sounds as if there are problems with your AV2. I lost the right channel when in 3/2/1 mode and had similar muting problem. Repaired by Naim in about an hour. Sounded great ever since.

I have the same problem (in 3/2.1 mode also) - always with the right channel. However it does only happen when it's first introduced to a source and moving the volume up sorts it out. I'm in Japan so the logistics of sending it back are horrible. It has already been back once for another problem and I can't face being without it for another month as it sounds excellent since it's earlier repair!

Sounds like a software problem, ask your dealer to update it. If your dealer is too far away, contact Naim or your distributor.

I also have a AV2 and have different set of problems. Mine are in the Multi mode when playing DVD-A. The center and right will only work sometimes and then I have to turn it off and on and then it starts to work again. Anybody else with bugs in their AV2? Also I can not get a telrac hometheater 5.1 test/set up disc to play in 5 channels. It's automatic switching will only play it in stereo!

I had the same problem as Rod. It was a bug in earlier software.

To check revisions Press and hold the OSD button. The S/W version will show on the display. I think the latest is P106 (sorry can't check mine as no OSD button programmed on the pronto but pre upgrade it was P104).

Since I had the PIC and S/W update,no more buzzy bee problems, I can also decode EX as well.

Many thanks for all your replies. I too have had the Rodney problem but hadn't mentioned it. My software is P209/F421 - does anyone know what the latest is?

I have spoken to the dealer and the box will go in for repair in the new year. A lot of hassle when you consider what we pay for these boxes.

Rod,

Email Naim to see what the lasest version should display. They are very helpfull. It's just the upgrade cured the distortion problem for me, and it appeared to be a known problem, as I decided to upgrade after reading about a fix on the forum.

AVC0102 is the last version for those having had the PIC upgrade.
P208 and P209 should be updated to AVC0102.

The last version with the old PIC is operational without bugs, its number is P106.

Mine shows P106 - which I presume means I have the old PIC.
Question: What is a PIC?
Assuming I have the old one, should I upgrade it and if so, why?

I should mention that it seems to work fine as it is :-)

Ta, Martin.

Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......

Martin:

P106 is OK, my personal AV2 at home works perfectly with it, as long as you have the 4.21 firmware.
There are no short term advantages to upgrade the PIC. PIC is the name of the microcontroler controling the unit, the chip has on board memory. the PIC upgrade is a change of this PIC to a model with more on-board memory to handle future software upgrades.

With a P106, firmware 4.21, the only usable thing you don`t have is RS232 support.

Rod,
0102 appears very shortly after 0101, so i immagine the bug has been discovered and corrected by Naim. The service dep will just upgrade your soft to 0102.
I never had the 0101 version, i jumped from 106/209 to 0102.
