Guilty pleasures

Posted by: irwan shah on 01 June 2010

It is nice to find so many jazz fans on these forums. However, do any of you have stuff in your highly respectable collections that would raise quite a few eyebrows? I will start the ball rolling by admitting that I have works by the following band(s) / singer(s) which many of my friends consider 'uncool':

1. Abba (a couple of CDs)
2. Air Supply (two pieces of vinyl)
3. The Bee Gees (one soundtrack - no prizes for guessing which one)
4. Barry Manilow (I am ashamed to state the number of vinyl records. The fingers on one hands are not enough. Winker )

Big Grin

What are your guilty pleasures?

Music is music, no cool or uncool. It's nice to see so much Jazz here, but there are other types of music that can be enjoyed on Naim

so here goes

1) 50 Cent
2) Rihanna
3) Eminem
4) Snoop Dog
5) Warrant
6) Beyonce
7) Duran Duran
8) NickelBack
9) Def Leppard
10) Motley Crue

As the lady gaga says, in that case, "just dance"

I quite like Timbaland produced Nelly Furtado's loose album too.

My naims bring it to life and it's really good fun. If you only listen to Jazz, the naims are capable of so much fun, you have to try some dance music !

Wings (the band the Beatles could have become, according to one A. Partridge)
Posted on: 01 June 2010 by Guido Fawkes
I have a complete set of Wings albums as well as the entire recorded output of Chas n Dave. Mind you I do not have that many Jazz albums. I also have records by Marie Lloyd, George Formby, Gracie Fields, Max Bygraves, Noel Coward, Flanders and Swann, Rolf Harris (triple CD set), Cilla Black, Petula Clark and Napalm Death.

The Bee Gees were are a great band until they caught falsetto and nout wrong with Abba. I don't have any of the records on ali's list. I did get a Chemical Brothers' CD free with the Sunday Times, but I haven't played it.

So I say

Give me Love, give me Can, give me Meat Loaf
Give me Rush, give me Marquee Moon
Michael Ball or The Fall
I could listen to them all
In the twilight or the afternoon
Irk the purists
Irk the purists at the back

Hall & Oates, random Goth, Miles Davis
Patti Smith, Simply Red, Sly Stone
Be they false or for real, I don’t care and nor does Neil
Just so long as we can hear their songs
Irk the purists
it could well be an Olympic sport
Irk the purists
If you’ve never, then you ought

Husker Du-Du-Du
Captain Beefheart
ELO
Chris de Burgh
Sun Ra
Del Amitri
John Coltrane
Irk the purists
Come on now boy, you know it feels so right

Not so much a guilty pleasure as a permanently unfashionable pleasure - The Stranglers. Just about the only rock I listen to. Still going strong as well, I saw them live twice in March this year. If Jazz musicians can go on into their 90s, why not? I think my funeral requests will be a mixture of Beethoven and The Stranglers - should confuse some people.

Dire Straits - Romeo and Juliet.

A totally uncool band to admit to liking, but this song is really rather pleasant.

However, Walk of Life is an absolute monstrosity.

Dire Straights Brother in arms is a classic, and so is private investigations.

Agree that walk of life is a track one could wish they have pressed the "delete" button on the Sony digital recorder they used.

I gave the Dire Straits albums I had away as I knew I was more likely to win the lottery than play them again - I have to agree that Walk of Life is dire and would come in my list of worst records ever made though not as bad as In The Air (the song I dislike more than any other).

However, I'll admit that I like Iron Butterfly's In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.

What's wrong with the Stranglers ? Except "La Folie" I think they made some good music. I do not feel guilty listening to them :-) Other story with Black Eyed Peas: Boom, Boom, Pow :-)

My listening is not restricted to jazz. I do like music from other genres. I have Eminem on vinyl (hip-hop), all of Jamiroquai's albums on CD (acid jazz, funk, dance), all of Nitin Sawhney's albums on CD (an electic mix of flamenco, folk, indian classical and dance), Moby on vinyl (dance with blues and folk). The one thing in common with all these albums is that they are best heard loud. However, that is something I cannot do at the moment as I have neighbours! Big Grin

Dear Avid Fan:

inherit my mantle and surpass my achievements.

Investigator Graham interests me.
Very purposeful looking. I hope we can correspond.

P.S. I like Betty Boo and Doris Day.

In that case I like Jessica Rabbit and Barbara Streisand too. Winker

Well, Sandie Shaw and Petula Clark and Nancy Sinatra!

Lieutenant Pidgeon - The seminal toetapper "Mouldy old dough".

Simply impossible to resist playing "air" penny whistle along to.

Staggering on 24k gold Japanese vinyl.

Albert Hammond - Free Electric Band
Brian Adams - Summer of 69 (Unplugged)
Benni Benassi - Satisfaction

It's usually single tracks for me rather than whole artists. The one album is Robbie Williams - Life Through a Lens, but that's more because I learnt a fair amount about engineering from it.

Every sane man likes Doris Winker

It's a Secret Service letter drop and stakeout. He shows: we take him. Anything from Chicago?

PS - I also confess to liking Manfred Mann.

I genuinely struggle with this whole guilty pleasures thing. I like what I like and to hell with opinion (though I might be able to recommend a decent psychiatrist if someone out there has a serious yen for The Birdy Song or Agadoo).

ABBA? Wonderful pop.
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida? Great psych.
Manfred Mann (the pop group)? Some great hits and Mighty Garvey's an under-rated album
Manfred Mann Chapter Three? Volume One is one of the great (mostly) undiscovered albums - Brit jazz-fusion meets Dr. John.

Even Mike Lacey's thing for Katie Melua isn't that embarrassing (as long as he keeps it under better control).
