Provokiev's Romeo and Juliet, which recording?

Posted by: Whizzkid on 10 March 2007

Hi all

Just need a little advice on the best performance of this score (preferably available on Vinyl). This will be my first foray into Classical Music and this piece seems to be a good place to start.

Thanks Dean.

Algis Zuraitis - Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra

On Melodiya two LP set, could take some finding.

Pretty good though.

Funnily enough, I've been seeking a copy of this too.
If you're looking for clean, sharp recording you'd have to do pretty well to find a better one than the Naxos (Ukraine National Symphony Orchestra/Andrew Mogrelia). It's recent and apparently very well recorded.
Offerings from Chandos( if you like their 'dry-er' sound), Decca and DG tend to get slated for their interpretations but the Conifer recording (Royal Philharmonic Orchestra/Daniele Gatti) gets high praise sonically and artistically.

i think you have to stay away from the recent Ashkenazy, which should be brilliant.

We watched the ballet in Prague on our honeymoon and I was bowled over by all aspects of the performance and piece.

This one?

No, that one is conducted by Gennadi Rozhdestvensky.

Also Whizzkid did mention a preference for vinyl.

Oops, yes of course.

Thanks Boys

I think I'll have to start with a CD of the score and maybe try and hunt down a good Vinyl version if i like it.

I've just ordered this one:
from Caiman via Amazon.co.uk
It seems to get very good reviews from Grammophone and other forums despite what I said above!
There's a few copies on eBay from Decca and DG at the moment.

Thanks Cyrene

I check that one out I'll see if Harold Moores in London has it. I like to buy my recordings in shops, I find buying over the internet rather unexciting and I also would like to see record shops survive.

Same here but living in the sticks with no decent shops locally has it's drawbacks.
However, outfits like MoleJazz now sell on eBay so it's not all bad news.

I do understand, I'm very lucky I work in Central London and am able to go to about 7 shops daily.
