Help Regarding A Virgin Set Top Box
Posted by: Analogue on 24 February 2009
Hi,
I have just had a Vigin set-top box installed...
When playing back Video tapes via the analogue TV remote, i get the picture only and have to listen to the sound through the set-top box - is this normal?
Also, if i wish to hear TV via the box into my 72 pre-amp, i have to use a SPDIF optical link to my pre, i wouldn't of thought this was possible with a 72.
Any help and suggestions regarding this would be most helpful.
Regards,
Chris N

Chris,
I found parts of your post a bit confusing, for example, "playing back Video tapes via the analogue TV remote". Not sure what you mean by that. I also presume you're talking about a Virgin cable box. Over the years I've had various types of Virgin boxes connected alongside various VCRs and DVD players without any problems whatsoever. If you care to describe in a bit more detail exactly what you have connected, and how it's all connected, maybe somebody can help.
Cheers.
Tom.

Thanks TomK,
I will attempt to explain things a little better?
When i was using a normal free-view set-top box, i was able to play back video tapes from the VCR to the TV as if the set-top box was not in situe,ie just TV and VCR, this way i obviously got both sound and vision.
With the Virgin set-top box i can now get vision only - by using as above, in order to get sound as well i have to go through the Virgin box, or rout both sound and vision through the Virgin box.
My question is:- is this normal or have i done something wrong with set-up?
Thanks IHTH

Chris,
I always had my devices connected through Scarts so nothing went through the cable box i.e. the cable, VCRs and DVDs all had their own Scart connection to the TV. That all worked perfectly. I still don't understand exactly how your cable and VCR are connected to your TV. Is it an old TV or do you have only one scart input or something?
Sorry for being obtuse.

Hi Tom,
My DVD has it's own scart socket.
The TV (Toshiba-5 year old CRT)is linked together with the Virgin box sharing the other scart socket, I also have an aerial plugged into the TV and VCR for analogue only.
As said in the original post, all worked well with a Free-view box, so i can't see why it should different with tha Virgin box.
Thanks for your help.

Is your VCR connected to the cable box? As far as I remember the scarts on the cable box were output only to enable VCR recording.
Alternatively, are you using full scarts? As you probably know not all scarts are fully wired so not all signals are active. I remember a long time ago having sound problems caused by using a cheap scart.
Maybe you're just using a different box from any I've seen. At the moment we have two: V+ and Pace. Neither would allow you to watch VCR through the box.
Sorry again for labouring things. It would probably take 5 minutes to check visually and see what's wrong.

Thanks Tom,
I get A&V from the VCR through the Vigin box, but visual only from the VCR into the TV.
I'll reconnect everything and see if this helps?
This is not a real problem - more an annoyance

Chris,
Looks like you've got a different box from any I've seen. You weren't with NTL before Virgin came along were you? None of the Telewest or Virgin boxes I've had over the years would work in this manner.
Looks like I can't help, which is a shame. I'd call their helpdesk if you can't crack it on your own.
Cheers.

No - just use the audio outputs (red and white phono sockets) on the Virgin box. The SPDIF is digital out and is not suitable straight into a 72. As for the VCR - can you not just connect it to the TV via a spare Scart and bypass the Virgin box ?

james n,
Thank you for your help.
The Virgin/Samsung box has no phono out sockets, only SPDIF.
Unable to use the spare TV scart socket as this is used for DVD.
