Naim Allaes or Spendor S8

Posted by: Mike Gundry on 14 May 2003

Been listening to speakers today, narrowed it down to Spendor S8 or Naim Allaes. The wife likes the Spendor's I prefer the Allaes. Fronted by LP12, Densen Beat CDP and Naim 200 & 202. To replace existing Ruark Talisman, I think the Allaes sound like a better version off the Ruark's. But I also like the Spendors plus they are £300.00 less. I want a speaker that we are not going to tire off as we tend to buy something and stick with it, have had the Talisman's since 1990. Just need something to put the iceing on the cake. Please no SBL's !

Mike,
Personally speaking, I thought that the Spendors had more bass that was less well defined than the Allae. The Spendor is a nice warm cuddly speaker that is cosy to sit down and listen too.
The allae on the other hand is much more dynamic has more drive and grabs you by (name body part here) and shakes you around and makes sure that you are listening to the music.
both are really enjoyable. The allae has more scope for growth in terms of going active etc. I heard both driven by the new 200 and the new 250. The 250 made the biggest difference to the SPendor which REALLY improved, probably because they are a heavier load than the Allae.
Ultimately it is down to what your priorities are, your musical taste and what you both enjoy the most.

A speaker which I preferred over both the Allaes and the Spendors (S8 and S9) last year was the Dynaudio Contour 1.8/II. These are under £2k and combine the dynamics of the Allae with the neutrality of the Spendors. The Allaes do have a 'hear-through' quality which is very appealing, but I found them too coloured over the spectrum for long-term satisfaction - as per the Credos before them.

Keep your current speakers and get a CDX2. Do it and don't argue. Denson a nice CD player but really Rega territory IMHO.
