The next iMac owner? ME!
Posted by: Tony Lockhart on 06 November 2008
The ex-girlfriend looked at my monitor tonight and wondered how on earth I could read anything on it (it's a 21" Sony CRT, about 10 years old).
So, I'll be keeping my eyes on the Apple Refurbished store (thanks to whoever it was here that mentioned the refurbs)and getting the next one that I can afford.
I can't wait to feel smug and superior.

Hi Tony,
Well done - an excellent decision if I may say so

Well, that was good fortune. There was a refurbed 20" iMac with 2.0GHz Core Duo etc etc on there this morning. Was! £639 incl. del. seemed fair to me, not much more than a replacement PC would have cost.

Mmmm, I checked every day for the last week and it seemed to change every day. 'My' iMac has been removed already.

Sounds expensive to me that model is 1 year and 3 months old and with the new models coming up in January...

My frayed nerves won't last til then!
I'm wasn't expecting a bargain, just a fairly priced way out of Windoze and anti-virus aggro.
This will probably be my desktop for the next 10 years so a few pounds here and there is of little consequence. The cheapest current iMac is £800.

The most fairly priced way out of windows is Linux you can download it for free.
I doubt that your iMac will last for 10 years. In 1998 my dad bought a new computer a Pentium II 300 mhz with 64 mb (100mhz) ram and a 8 mb videocard. 10 years is a bit optimistic I think 5 years would be more credible. I recently replaced my almost 5 year old eMac with the cheapest current iMac. It's a nice computer but Apple is no holy grail.

Agreed, Here are some differences between the current 2,4 Ghz 20-inch iMac and the 2,0 Ghz version dating from August 2007.
The new version uses 45 nM technology and the old version has 65nM. When comparing the two processors the 45nM runs slightly faster and uses less energy. The front side bus is also of higher clock speed 1066 Mhz with 800 mhz memory as opposed to 800 mhz FSB with 667mhz memory.
But to be fair I think the performance difference is not worth the £170 difference in price.
Please note that the display used in the 20-inch version is a TN screen with 6-bit colors (65536 colors). Dithering is used to display millions of colours.
