Clapton and Cream (and Loudon Wainwright) on TV

Posted by: J.N. on 10 October 2005

Wed 12th October BBC4 TV.

Four progs from 9pm, followed by two progs/performances from the wonderfully whacky Loudon Wainwright III.

Enjoy.

Just watched the Cream @ Albert Hall DVD; was somewhat amazed by the preponderance of Old Balding White Guys in the audience. Is the younger set largely ignorant of Cream?

The bands' performance seemed restrained as well, perhaps so as not to cause the OBWGs cardiac arrest.

(I am an OBWG myself.)

Ask yourself a couple of questions.

Cream last played in 1969 and have had little publicity since: How would you expect the younger set to have heard of them?

Official tickets sold out within minutes of being released, mainly to touts (from what I understand): How could the younger set afford the £800 or so being asked for the touts for a ticket (assuming, that is, that they'd heard of Cream - as to which, see above)?

I believe that many of the OBWGs flew in from the United States!

Fair comment. At the recent concerts I've attended I've looked round and wondered why so many old fat grey haired folk were there. I've sadly and suddenly realised that others were looking at me and thinking the same thing.

Well, I suspect the younger set read, and Cream occupy a place in Rock history right by Jimi Hendrix, whom folks of all ages still revere. I was just struck by the, er, concentration of this particular demographic (OBWGs).

As to your comment about OBWGs from the U.S., that's spot on...I know of a wealthy lawyer from 'round here (Seattle, definitely OBWG) who paid something like $2,000 per ticket for four tickets seated near the stage; another reason to hate lawyers? Winker

Thank goodness the DVD was only $20 (I'm definitely working class).

!!! This happened to me at the last high school reunion I attended...I sort of think I still look like (the 70's) Ronnie Wood, when in actual fact I look more like Ronnie Barker (in his 70's).

I forgot it was on so missed the first half hour but really enjoyed what I saw (from Politician on). I was surprised at how frail Jack looked although by and large he sang very well. I'm listening to the CD at the moment and it's quite superb.

I believe he's had a liver transplant recently; result of cancer. His body initially rejected the new liver, so I'm not surprised he looks a bit frail. I noticed he sat on a stool for part of the evening's performance.

He's the most underrated singer in rock music, IMHO.
