Hicaps
Posted by: Sir Crispin Cupcake on 28 January 2004
Anyone checked out TomTomAudio recently? He's asking £565 for a 15 year old Hicap and £585 for 14 year old one. Just rang him and he doesn't know the service history of either. Anyone else think this is ridiculous?

I think his prices include delivery and installation and a 12 month warranty.

Yes he is dreaming, I bought a 1989 model that had just gone back to naim and been totally re-capped for £275 from a well establised main dealer

Check your private topics in "My Space" Richard.

Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......

I know TTA has a good name here, but you and I would offer 12 months warranty, installation etc at these margins.
When did a HiCap ever go wrong?

I agree that those prices seem high so the answer is to negotiate.

???? I've just looked, and you are right, but I look here often and usually HiCaps are going for £395ish, and there is a 1985 one there now for this price. I generally think his prices are very reasonable and I'm surprised at the HiCap price, but have you called him to ask why? There must be a very good reason.

They must be shipped in a new box.

To put it in context, I've got a Dec 2003 olive hicap (custom order) , s/n 201xxx, which is therefore effectively new, and I'd be delighted to get £585 for it (if I were selling it - I'm not sure that I am, yet).
So, £500+ for any 10yo+ hicap seems unusually optimistic on behalf of the seller, when considerably newer hicaps which are still under warranty can be had for those sorts of prices.

I tried offering £400 provided they had been serviced in the last year or two, but got a flat "No".
Thanks to everyone for your replies.

The guy is making a living trading in Naim gear. He travels and backs up his sales with a personal service. If you want cheaper then shop around or bargain with him, but there is no need to knock him - he's entitled to try for as much as he wants, same as anyone selling gear

I have to agree with Rasher here.
The man will travel to you and will fit the item. That takes time and it has to be paid for. How much do you get paid for a days work. If you want bargin prices, then buy privately.
No one is forced to buy any thing from anybody and you can walk away from any deal you want.
I bought a NAT01 from him after he part exchanged my NAT03. I reckon that I could have saved about £100.00 if I sold and bought privately. That is not so easy with NAT01's.
He came out and did the deal and acted professionally from beginning to end. I think he earned his £100.00

£100 for a day's work? I wouldn't get out of bed for that. That's very good value for money and doesn't sound even vaguely like a rip off merchant.
Not connected with Tom Tom and never bought anything off him. But I may well do at some stage.
Cheers

I also have had a positive experience with James of Tom Tom Audio.
Last year I bought a pair of Shahinian Arcs from him at a very fair price - he also gave me a good trade-in price for my old Linn Kans.
I found him to be a pleasant guy to do business with.

Hi Chaps,
Good to see some lively debate on the forum.
Excuse while I put my oar in, put I'd like to make a couple of points.
Richard, when you asked me if the Hi Caps had been serviced I told you exactly what I knew at that time, which was, that to the best of my knowledge they hadn't been, and as they had just come in I had not had a chance to check with Naim. Equally I did not think your offer of £400 was reasonable and thus had to decline.
I have never set out to be the cheapest and there are other sources of naim equipment if this is your prime buying criteria. As my clients have pointed out in response to this thread, I'm offering what I hope is a good service (i.e, advice, dems, installation, 12 month guarantees etc) and I am not just a 'box shifting' operation.
My prices and margins simply reflect what I need to charge in order to make a living out of doing this. I work on massively lower margins than high street dealers selling new equipment, who I am sure can thus pass on their trade-in's with a minimal mark up having made an excellent profit on the sale of the new equipment.
This is not a hobby, this is my business, and I'm afraid I will not compromise the service I provide (to well over 100 customers in my first 12 months) by 'knocking' items out for a quick buck.
If some of the prices for individual items seem high, it simply reflects what I believe to be an excellent, well cared for piece of kit, as in the case of the NAT 01 tuner which is the best I have ever seen, having been owned and cherished by a BBC Radio Engineer from new, and as you can imagine looks like it has just come out of the factory.
If it is my misfortune to have forced myself to listen to a wonderful NAT 01 for the last few weeks because it hasn't been snapped up then I only have myself to blame.
Thanks to everyone who has supported my new venture, it really has been a pleasure dealing with you all. To the best of my knowledge no one who has actually bought from me has gone away feeling they have been overcharged and many first time customers have come back many times since.
Cheers,
James
