Burning in my 200
Posted by: drbri on 10 January 2006
I've had quite an eye-opening experience today with my new 200. I've had it 6 weeks now and, to be honest, I've been quite disappointed with it until today. It's sounded to be struggling on some complicated recordings and distinctly harsh on others.
But tonight it's really gone through a step-change in my opinion. My system sounds absolutely fantastic - smooth, powerful and open. Now I known there are many people here who don't have much truck with burn-in. I myself have no satisfactory explanation. But even more than with my CDX2, I'm absolutely convinced my 200 needed those 6 weeks to start performing.

Hi drbri,
Had the exact same experience. I took delivery of a new 200 last week of November and I havn't been completely happy with it. On some CDs the sound has been a bit thin and harsh. Then this monday something had happened and now I think the system sounds fantastic! This is close to the 6 weeks you are talking about. Very interesting.

drbri,
my 282/300 are 3 weeks old and a bit disappointing just yet. I'll let you know what happens in February. My power supply is a bit intermittent. The mains is poor, lights flicker all the time and when it's off my generator kicks in. Will another 3 weeks be long enough ?

I borrowed a 200 for a week or so just before Christmas when my olive 250 went tits up and back to Naim for repair. It sounded excellent straight out of the box and consistently good throughout the week. To be honest it was better than I ever heard my 250 sound, until it came back recapped...

I made a massive upgrade from the Olive 3 series to my present system in just about one big leap and straight out of the box the new system had the WoW factor, then a few days later I was almost tempted to eBay the lot! The sound was terrible!!!
I spoke to my dealer who set it up in the first instance and he said beware of 'burn in' times. A week passed and I asked my dealer to come round again and tripple check things as I was getting really frustrated with it all. He advised me to 'hang in there' and said it will all come right after the electronics had 'burned in' - all a load of voodoo, I thought. Even my wife thought the sound was poor for all that brass I'd spent. It took about five weeks for all the elctronics to come on song and when it did - bloody hell did it!
Be warned it also takes about a week to settle down after we have been on holiday.
All the best,
David

I think our heads are worming and burning, not the electronics...

Hi Lars,
I'm delighted that you agree ! It really was almost an overnight change after 6 weeks. So Dave - be patient I would say. It's a horrible feeling having 10 thousand quids worth of black boxes sounding disappointing, but in my experience when they've had those few weeks to settle down, they really put a smile on your face !
Hicap for my 282 will be ordered very soon now, and I'll go through the same experience again no doubt !
