Big Brother is watching

I posted yesterday evening & ASKED if I could advertise Naim kit on the forum. No advert, no prices, no contact numbers. Just asked.

I quickly looked this morning before work & noticed two people had pointed out that it shouldn’t be done, but kindly advised a couple of good sites to advertise. I came in tonight to follow up & guess what? Post gone!

Bit extreme I thought. Don’t you? Maybe Naim don’t like it to be known that some people actually sell their kit.

I’ll be careful not to use words like “AMBIENCE”, “SOUNDSTAGE” or “SUBTLE” on here, the Naim profanity police will be down like a tonne of bricks. Big Grin

Now let’s have a sweep on how long this post lasts!

There are plenty of sites that do the job perfectly well already, and it keeps them free from accusations of stepping on their dealers toes, I can't see what would be in it for them.

As it is, there are enough 'I've got so-and-so for sale, but I can't think for the life of me where I should advertise it' adverts as it is, IMO.

Can see both your points.

I honestly didn't intend to do that "sneaky ad" Mekon (good idea though).

I didn't see any note saying no advertising & thought I might get a mail ticking off rather than a silent removal.

We're still here at the mo...

I agree. I really can't see how a separate trading section for Naim kit only, could do any harm at all.

If anything; it would open up the forum to more people. That's gotta be good for business, because people either want to buy new or s/h.

However; the official answer from Richard Dane is this:-

quote:
we felt it was important to keep the focus of the forum on advice and discussion. Once you allow for sale and wanted ads, it's all too easy for the focus to shift to a second-hand trading site. There are already a number of sites that have gone down this road.

Don't forget that second-hand and ex-dem equipment is often readily available from our dealer network and comes with the good advice, experience and support (not to mention some form of warranty) which ensures that you won't buy in haste and repent at your leisure....

And since the answer to your query is well known to the vast majority of us, I'm glad it was removed - thus reducing the clutter.

Why didn't you just use the 'contact administrators' or 'contact naim' options from the various websites? or search the forum before posting? or perused the forum for other evidence of censorship before making the accusation. The admins here use a light hand, though there are a few hot buttons....

If the removal of your post was censorship, it was so trivial that nothing was lost by it. Save your energy for things that matter (like real censorship).

Regards.

This is an official Naim site and I think it quite right that there is a 'no buy and sell' rule....however....why not have a section where all official Naim dealers can list there S/H and ex-dem goods. This would'nt tread on the dealers toes but would help us poor destitute Hi-Fi adicts pick up the odd bargain.

Hi Ian,

yes, I'm afraid your post was deleted by the moderators. The reason being that there has been a spate of similar "where can I sell my kit" posts recently and while I have expressed concerns and given them the benefit of the doubt, there's no need for any more as only a cursory search through posts of the last few days will give you the answer you require.

**didn't see any note saying no advertising & thought I might get a mail ticking off rather than a silent removal**

The rules are stated upon registration and a short reminder about "for sale" ads is posted on the opening page as follows: "Welcome to the Naim Forums. Please feel free to contribute, but please remember the best place for advice on Naim Hifi is from Naim HQ or your Naim dealer! No for sale or wanted ads!, No Reps! and please note forum rules when you register."

The issue over private for sale/wanted ads has been discussed on many previous occasions. J.N has quoted one of my replies and I think Naims position is very clear.

It's not personal, just a case of rules being rules.

I dont see the harm in a buy and sell section on the forum. Naim have a very enviable share of the market place with customer loyalty second to none
As one of the most popular hifi manufacturers sites it would probably open the market for Naim kit to more people which can be no bad thing.
Would be better than the silly prices on ebay etc

Wow, stop it! I'm not leading the revolution. I'm a lover, not a fighter.

I do think you both (PR & alex95) make good points. The Naim way is the "upgrade path" & yes, it is expensive. The old kit has to be sold somewhere.

I think there is..but we just can't get access to it. It's probably those two forums under "Naim Distribution".

Blimey, that was a bit esoteric.

Actually, I think I may be psychologically damaged by Michael Jackson. My youth was devoted to Led Zeppelin / Floyd / Sabbath etc. I always looked down my nose at that sort of “girl music”.

During my late teens / early twenties I used to frequent Night Clubs 2 or 3 times a week. I was basically a rocker, who didn’t fancy rocker birds (& was sickened by the smell of patchoulie Oil sp?). I wanted the ones with boob tubes, bare legs & high heels! Unfortunately, this was pretty much a one-way thing.

At the time, Jackson had brought out an exceptionally irritating bunch of tunes, which the DJ’s & everyone apart from me thought was the business. Come 1.30, the dreaded time had come around again. Time to pluck up the courage to wobble round like a twat, to some meaningless ditti, just to stand any chance of getting “a grip”.

I rarely brought myself to make that step. The alcohol induced window between ready-to-dance & loss of ability to speak/stand, is very small & difficult to achieve at a precise time.

In the haze, two tunes stick in my memory. “da da, da da da da, don’t stop till you get enough” & “leave your mighty pride up on the shelf, & just enjoy yourself”.

I still believe today those tunes contained subliminal messages, which spoke directly to me (or maybe all of my kind). They were telling me :

“DANCE you gutless plonker”
“yes you, you un-coordinated geek”
“it’s home for another one-in-a-bed sex romp for you tonight spotty”

It’s all flooding back now!

Why did you bring Michael Jackson into it? I was moaning because they won’t let me advertise my kit! What’s Michael Jackson got to do with that?

Richard

Are you going to post a response to the suggestion you create a section for dealers to post their 2nd hand ex-dem kit?

Yes, it has been suggested in the past but for one reason or another hasn't been possible or practicable as yet.

We'll see what happens next time the forum comes up for review.

I wasn’t having a go about you bringing up about Michael Jackson. All tongue in cheek. I’m over the worst of it now & the twitch has all but gone.

Can’t say I’ve heard much Van Halen. I lost interest in rock music in 1976/77 when it all went a bit “Spinal Tap”. At 16 years of age, rock had lost it’s way & the raw power of the Clash & Pistols was too much to resist. The album collection was sold for beer money. I didn’t listen to rock until 6 or 7 years ago when I started to replace my old stuff (doesn’t sound the same on CD though!). I suppose I’ve always looked down my nose at 80’s & American rock bands as impostors, pop with riffs. In fact, with the odd exception (Nirvana for eg), I don’t think the yanks can do rock at all.

Re the girls, I’m sure you had the right idea. I was chasing the wrong ones. Your fixation with Goth girls sounds very interesting. Anything you want to tell us? Big Grin

Re selling 2nd hand Naim kit : unless money is no object or time is tight, it’s normal to get a worst case scenario from the dealer & then try to sell privately for a few more quid. For a start, the dealer has to add VAT. 17.5% dead money & second time around too! it’s organised crime (by the government that is, not the dealers). People are always going to sell privately, so why not have it on an appropriate site? I also firmly believe it would create more trade for the dealers. If that next upgrade is going to cost a bit less to do, it’s more likely it will be done.

Can someone explain the Tick system? (this thread now has 5 ticks).

Does that mean the Buy/Sell idea is a popular one?

Thanks
