What amazes is that so many choose non european destinations and thus lose annual pension increases.

It's really no big deal. In todays increasingly mobile world people relocate more. England is a small country so moving to Spain is like an American moving from New Jersey to California.
Also, not surprisingly UK's move to warmer climates, eg Spain, Australia. Many of those moving to the States may have done so for better jobs and other economic reasons.

Brits moving to the US for better paid jobs used to be called the "Brain Drain." Fredrik

Is that because it is like throwing your brain down the drain?
Or is that just my experience of friends that have moved there after a while?

The UK is a brilliant place to make money. It is also a lousy to retire due to overcrowding etc.
Therefore the trend is obvious, make your pile in the UK whist you are young and retire abroad where the sun shines and costs are low.
