Knocking CD 3.5

Posted by: solid state on 26 January 2004

Great - just bought a flatcap2 to power cdp and pre , settled back for an evenings listening , and have just discoverd my cdp has develped a knocking noise when spinning a disc .

Its not loud , more a tap tap tap really , and only audible near the unit . Playback seems to be unaffected .This unit is about 5 years old and reasonably heavily used (in a naim music lover kind of frequency) . Any ideas ? Am I about to have some sort of transport failure ? are these units still servicable by Naim Frown

any advices welcome

Hi,

Yes Naim can still service your CD3.5,
If you are worried about the knocking take it down your local Naim Dealer who will take a look at it for you,

If need be they can send it back to Naim for a service..

Maybe there is something lose inside ?

Presumably this is happening on all discs?

I ask; because some discs (if one's ear is close enough to the machine) do make a slight rotational ticking noise.

I've never worked out why, but wonder if the said discs are pressed off-centre and it's the noise of the laser head making rapid side to side movements to track the disc?

If you have substantial knocking on all discs; the transport probably is 'circling the drain'.

However; your 3.5 can be given new life and will come back sounding better than before. I know; because I have a refurbished CD3 with a new transport.

Naim will make other tweaks to bring your baby up to spec.

The bad news is that it can cost in the region of £350.

Good luck.

Thanks JN (and Brighty)

Your right to ask JN because the noise is not on all discs so it could be the same thing as you suggest Cool- I will keep an eye (ear!) on it .

Really glad to know 3.5 still servicable as well .

I feel much more relaxed about things now , and will listen to the music not the transport !

There may by sonmething wrong with the flatcap.

I had a problem with the PSU of my Rotel CDP. It would play OK with the fault, but it sounded as if the disc was being thrown about inside the player. I fixed the PSU fault, it now runs like a Rolls Royce. Try removing the Ftatcap.

Aha - but doesn't the Flatcap only power the ANALOG stages of the player? Therefore it will not effect the transport/rotation noises at all...

My brand new 5 makes a (VERY) quiet ticking noise on a couple of discs - it's as suggested - down to off-centre discs. They made a hell of a lot more noise in my old Rega Planet Smile

BTW - how much of a difference sonically is there with the Flatcap on the 3.5? Thinking about getting a Mk1 one for my CD5??

I flatcapped my 3.5 and the result was much smoother and less fatigue on some material. Just sounded more cilvilised.

Cool as - that's the only gripe with the 5 - it's not QUITE fully run-in, and though the treble is less graty than the Planet - SOMETHING there is more tiring.

It's not the PRaT though - that's spot on and it can "do" slow, such as Kate Bush' The man with the child in his eyes, as well as it can do Mescaline by 1200 Mics...

Dom - The difference with a FC on my 3.5 is very worthwhile. If you can get a cheap one, don't hesitate.

I did hear a rumour that the FC can make "less than ideal" recordings sound, err, not very good. Is this true? I have a few slightly iffy recordings knocking (sorry about the pun!) about?

How can that be? if its a crap recording , it will sound just like it is , surely . And thanks for the "pun" Smile

I dont actually think my cdp has a problem - I really do think this is the "off center" disc problem - how come I never realised this before? - I would have thought that with modern standards discs should be pretty flawless , or made to very close tolerances

Have you tried removing the FC to see if the tapping reduces.

I have just listened to both my Rotel CD players. I played 5 CDs on both players. In all cases there was a faint ticking which sounded the same for all 5 CDs on both players.
Two of the CDs where CDRs, so I doubt it has anything to do with off centre pressing.

PS. My wife says she prefers me listening to my CDs with that green box not turned on.

You'd be wrong - I've got LOADS of CDs that are off centre, slightly warped or just plain noisy - there are some that actually resonate in my old Rega Planet. I had the misfortune to buy an ex-dem Kenwood CD walkman in the States once that was so finnicky, it would refuse to catalog off-centre discs at all!

CDRs are pressed like any other CD - they have a pre-groove that the recorder "traces" while making a recording, so the discs are just as on or off centre as any normal bought one...
