Gas/electricity switching

Posted by: Steve Bull on 27 February 2006

Trying to shave a few pounds of the bills, I've just been looking at the uswitch site to do some comparisons. Selecting results by service quality, the winner is Scottish Power who say thay can save me just under £80 pa and get a 3* (of 5) rating for service. Going by price alone, npower can save me £145 but get a 2* rating.

Any experiences with either company? Should I be worried about using npower and saving just over 20% on my bills?

Steve.

I've switched from nPower to British gas for both my electricity and gas. Given our lowish usage for a couple with no kids in a small bungalow we are slighly better off under BG than NP.

The important thing is they are now tied into a contract with us not to increase charges until 2010.

...and I've just gone the other way. Semi, 3 kids, and saved myself £360 a year. Steve it must have been a while ago if you got he 2010 deal.

About 18mths ago, I did the uswitch exercise, & scottish power came out best. I was previously using npower. About 6 mths later, one of the other mob came to our door, said he could save us money if we switched blah-blah blah. "Who are you presently using", he asked, & I replied "scottish power". Ah, he said. "In that case, I'll go now, they are the cheapest".
We've been happy enough with them, I guess the price of all existing mainstream fuels will spiral, & I think that to a degree it depends on where you live as to who is the cheapest for you.
On the same theme, "talk talk" landline phone system (run by the carphone warehouse" are much cheaper, (with no degredation of service) than dear old BT.

I am moving from scottish power, these creamers have taken the piss too many times in my estimation with price increases.
They offered me a capped price offer, until I saw through it, they would have me paying "x" amount per month to fund this price cap, the fact is I don't want my prices going up, all I would be doing by taking the price cap is paying now for intervening price increases, no way pal.
The thing too about price cap is that you're tied into a twelve month contract, other terms and conditions apply blah blah blah.
Finally, am I the only one to thing that we're being taken as suckers by the energy companies?
I mean, BG announce that they have to raise charges because they are paying more for supplies, they don't ofcourse tell you how much they're paying, but then sometime later they reveal record profits! ofcourse the profits are money made on the initial increases in people's bills.
Makes my blood boil, they will not carry the hit of a loss on one increase, yet tell you " you're so important to us " you're so important that they will watch you walk to another supplier with your £1000 yearly bill or whatever it is Frown

Hi Matt, your quote about talk talk, does that just work out cheaper as long as it is another talk talk customer you're calling? just that I heard this, so if you were a talk talk customer and you called me ( bt ) it would cost you more talking to me than a person on the talk talk network? just curious Winker

Talk Talk have three levels of communication package - the most expensive one does not charge you for any UK phone calls apart from the 084x and 087x type
Their foreign phone prices are 5p per minute for mainland Europe, North America and Australia NZ, but you can get 2p per minute calls out of the country from
http://www.call18866.co.uk/
you might get a better deal from these by staying on BT - just check the numbers.

Thanks Derek Winker
So no matter how long you're on the phone for it costs 4p? with the 18866? that sounds worth looking into.

I recommend the following site
www.moneysavingexpert.com
There they suggest that Uswitch is one of the worst comparison sites and recommends 2 better ones. I followed the advice.

Did anyone catch GMTV this morning? these switch companies were on the topic.
Apparently, there was a code that was brought out to protect customers, because some switch companies were directing customers towards energy companies offering the best commission, there are a number of switch companies that passed the code, some failed, uswitch is one that passed.
Anyone still with british gas needs to seriously do something, if I walked up to someone in the street and asked them for a fiver I would be told where to go, and maybe deservedly so, yet people are throwing away hundreds of pounds per year that they do not need to if they switched.

Bob can you provide the link that says that uswitch is one of the worst comparison sites? because I have looked at the link and cannot find any mention of this.
Cheers.

I am on the Moneysaver mailing list and this morning's e-mail had an article about digital tv. They recommended Uswitch for comparing TV deals but added the following about Uswitch

'Its TV tool is useful, but some of its other comparisons: telephone and gas & elec, leave much to be desired.'

... worth checking out these sorts of websites.

Even I swopped from British Gas/SWEB 13 months ago to Powergen, and monitor the supposed situation...
