CD 3.5, Heal Thyself! Huh?

Posted by: Markus on 08 December 2003

My CD 3.5 was doing the old "ERR" stop trick for a while. It was inconsistent, sometimes better, sometimes worse.

Being without funds to send it in for a laser replacement I've kept using it. Oddly enough, it seems to be less frequent.

Has anyone else had this experience? Can anyone account for what might cause it?

Weird, but I'm glad it's happening...

Hi Markus

The normal cause of this is discs slipping due to a mucky puck and/or platter. Old pucks also seem to get less sticky; so are worth replacing periodically.

People have also reported similar disc access glitches being caused by big voltage swings on the mains. These seem to sort themselves out, over time.

If the problem persists or gets worse; it probably is the transport circling the drain.

There's nothing worse than a mucky puck...
