New BBC Radio-2 J*** Program

Posted by: Mike-B on 09 March 2010

Might be getting some interesting new jazz on the wireless.
Jamie Cullum is hosting a new weekly jazz show on BBC R-2 starting Tuesday 6 April 7.00 to 8.00pm.

For those not familiar with Jamie's work, he is one of the new "pop" artists.
He has his own style & puts that over with the classics, plus he has his own stuff. He seems to be one of those who you either like or not. I first saw him 3 or so years ago at my local before he got the recording deal, he is impressive provided he does not go OTT on the "dramatics".

I guess he will be playing one or two of his own stuff but am really hoping he will be playing a good mix of all gendres, & maybe open up some new vogue & hard to find stuff.

I saw his first ever Australian concert in Sydney. We used to play his music loads (something the wife enjoyed) before the show but he really pissed me off with the "dramatics" at the show as it spoilt the music and put me off completely.

I await to see what his new show is like but I guess it will be a bit middle of the road.

It'll be Robbie Williams or James Blunt next and whose that other one Michael Bubble - oh well I'm sure those who like that type of music will love it. Probably not for me, but for those who like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Des O'Connor; Radio 6 is being sacrificed for this - Frown

If Radio 2 wanted a jazz programme why didn't they get Barbara Thompson.

Why didn't they get Helen Mayhew?

Or Jez Nelson or Mike Chadwick - two people who really understand jazz (guess that is radio 3 territory). At the end of the day, this is a populist programme (probably) so Jamie will fit the bill I guess.

thought of you guys earlier.
was talking to Jamie's Radio 2 show producer.

I think Jamie is perfect for the job. the guy might not have been around forever, but he has a genuine passion and understanding for music of many facets and has been given a luxurious and rare brief to play what he wants.

this show will be a good platform for a lot of naim artists (and other independent labels) presented by a voice and face the world that daytime listeners can relate to (as much as we all love jez nelson, helen mayhew and mike chadwick)

neil cowley trio (new naim signing) will be doing a maida vale session for Jamie in a few weeks. what other opportunities for a great but niche artist like that out there to do a session like that? i don't think there are enough, so respect to jamie, his production company and the beeb for trying to actually do something musical and meaningful in turbulent times!
