cd + lp12 heirarchy

Posted by: roman on 28 October 2002

having just added a hi-cap to my 72/140 (with thanks to those who advised this move, you know who you are),I'm looking to complete my upgrading. In the very short term I'm probably going to do the origin live counterweight thing to my rb300 on my planar 3, its only 70 quid and seems worth a punt. Does anyone have experience of this and of seperate phono stages? I'd like to squeeze every last drop out of the rega and was wondering whether the phono boards on my 72 could be bettered.

This brings me to my main point:can anyone provide a clear heirarchy of naim cd players past and present and also of Lp12's and all of their arms and upgrades as this will be the eventual route I take once I work discover the merits of cirkus bearings, trampolins valhallas etc and whether a 10 year old cds would be out performed by a cd5. You get the idea.

cheers

not even on a really, really GREAT day. A CDS is always a CDS - one needs a decent LP12 to better one.

As regards Linn hierarchy I would say,
This is the order go in if starting with basic type of arm and cartridge.
1.Linn Basic
2.Linn Valhalla
3.Linn Valhalla+Circus
4.Linn Lingo/Armageddon+circus
5.Linn Lingo/Armageddon+circus+Ekos/Aro/Wilson Benesch etc
6.Linn Lingo/Armageddon+circus+Ekos/Aro/Wilson Benesch+High end cartridge.

Vuk,

In my reads of recent threads, I think that very few forum members who have spent time comparing a cd3/3.5/5 wouldn't prefer the cd5. I listened at length to a CDI vs a CD5 as well, and thought the CDI came up way short, even if it were a brand new player I would not prefer it. In fact, in a recent thread I discussed my very recent demo of a cdx v cd5, although the x was a bit better, the cd5 was also great (thru a 52/500/allaes).

...Vuk didn't include the CD5 in his rankings.

I do know that my rather modest LP12 (basic/cirkus, akito, K18) trounced my CD3 and is more listenable for longer periods than the CDX's I've heard.

I also owned a P3 for 15 years. If vinyl is your thing, I wouldn't put more dosh into the P3 if you are planning in the fairly near future to get an LP12 anyway.

As to which LP12 to get, its a matter of choosing from what's available 2nd hand unless you are buying new. I know - duh - but if you search Loot or Audiogon (depending which side of the pond you are on) and then ask formum members something like:

"Which is better and is the price fair? LP12/cirkus/Valhalla/Akito/K9 for $XXXX or LP12/cirkus/Lingo/Ekos/Dynavector for $XXXX then you will have asked a question that people can answer and you will have an answer that you can act on.

Just my Tuppence -
