How connect speaker plugs?

Posted by: charliec on 03 July 2003

Hi all, I have buy a cable NACA5 and the Naim speaker plugs, but I do not know as to connect the cable into plugs. The cable must be knit or only coiled. Please help me.
Many Thanks. Carlo

And:
1) Use a bit of heatshrink to cover the bare bits. Use red for one of the wires and black for the other.
2) Mark both ends of one of the cables "left" and the other "right".
3) The cables are directional, socremember to run the cables in the right direction from amp to speakers.

If at all possible, get a dealer to do it. It's a tricky job and you only have one set of Naim plugs which are easily ruined if you're not sure what you're doing.

Thanks all.
I have buy this item second hand; I do not know dealers. The cable is currently terminated with others plugs and work fine but I would connect original plugs. There are online photos?

You don't HAVE to use Naim bananas on your cables. I've still got my plugs in a plastic bag, and use the straight bananas that the dealer who sold me the cable put on.

(In my case, the Naim plugs won't fit my speakers at the one end, and at the other would make the cable come out at a right angle down onto my rack shelf about 1.5 cm below the sockets in the back of my power amp, meaning I'd have to bend the cable or make a hole in my shelf.)

get a dealer to do it - the Naim plugs are demonstrably better. They are a bit tricky to solder. Please note, heatshrink is not required, nor labelling.

Naim's dealers have access to the instructions on how to do it correctly as well as the practice. The end result is you take home a set of correctly terminated speaker cables, and your system will sound better as a result.

HTH.

I disagree with you saying "heatshrink is not required, nor labelling".

The purpose of the heatshrinking is (help) to prevent accidental shorting of the contacts, either at the back of the amp, or at the speakers end. (I guess we could think of for-instances where something metal could find its way there, such as kids, or accidentally dropping a pen, etc...).

The purpose of labelling is to make sure that (a) left is connected to left and right to right, (b)+ is connected to + and - to -. In my case the cable runs under the carpet, so I can't tell which is which visually. (I could use a multimeter of course, but I find labelling is much easier!)

Of course, it's not obligatory, just advisable IMHO.

Prowla, you have the text to detirmin polarity, although I concede the text can rub off eventually.

The naim plugs will help determin polarity as the plus side has a tab and because of the overwhelming stifness of the wire its very easy to detirmin whats what the other end.

And I have never seen naca5 with heatshrink on it.

P.S. if soldering yourself, aparently you need to heat the banana up, then get sodler into the gap, now offer up the wire and heat up the plug again allowing the wire to sink into the solder. You need quite a bit.

Please note this information was given to me in good faith, but I am shit with solder so have never tried.

Prowla, you are of course entitled to your opinion. James and Garyi have explained with sufficient fluency the reason why your suggested install is unecessary. The RIBBED side of the NACA5 is used as +ve. The text denotes direction. The "ears" on the plugs clearly show which is left, which is right. Where there's any doubt, your dealer can make a first-class job for a modest charge - simple. They are trained to do the job. (did that sound ok, Mick? Wink )

I was referring of course to the Naim plugs on Naim's NACA5.

Hope this clarifies.
