Ginger Baker

Ok,

I have the Ginger Baker Trio'd 'Going back home', with Vharlie haden and Bill Frissell. Nice tunes, and good sound. I love the drum patterns that Ginger puts on the Disc and the bass from Charlie Haden, but Bill Frissel's guitar ... get's on my nerves after a while.

Does anybody know of a better showcase for Ginger Baker. Please do not mention the late 60s Power trio featuring Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton.

Thanks

He played on the second Masters of Reality album. The album itself is okay - no where near as good as the first (which is fantastic) but does have a very good Baker track called T.U.S.A. - about 'the inability of the Yanks to make a good cup of tea'.

I had that one, like a couple of cuts, but not enough to keep it in the collection

His two best albums are PIL's Album (or CD if that's your format) and Horses And Trees. Baker's drums were recorded in a big barn and the ambiance of the recordings are huge sounding(they were recorded simultaneously). There are no credits on the PIL record but Baker plays all the drums on it with Steve Vai on guitar, Jonas Hellborg on bass, and various other musicians. Both these records are produced (and written) by Bill Laswell. Ginger Baker appears on several other Laswell records as a guest but these are not showcases for Baker.

Hock'n'Ron,

On the subject of jazz drumming, have you heard Joey Baron's stick work on the Masada albums? Glorious!

I'm beginning to appreciate fine drummers, I particularly like Roy Haynes. I'll look into Joey baron and Masada. Which album is the most accesible, I notice that it is Joel Zorns group. My previous encounter with Joel Zorn, I didn't get.

Thanks for that tip, those albums may be available on vinyl. I buy many Cds, I can store CDs more easily than Lps at the moment, but still I have a constantly evolving Lp collection at about 500 LPs.
