Speakers

Posted by: Jack on 13 December 2001

After many years of being unimpressed with the sound from my Hi-Fi I recently decided to buy some second hand Naim equipment.

The sound has now vastly improved and I am very pleased. I have a CD3.5/flatcap/NAC92/NAP90.3 and intend to continue to improve via additional purchases as funds permit !

However, I have a set of Mission 733 speakers which I purchased many years ago. Reading through some of the posting I suspect that the next upgrade may well be the speakers ?

Could anyone suggest speakers that I should consider listening to as alternatives please ? Budget will be approx. £1000 but I want to ensure that whatever I buy will be suitable if I decide to upgrade the pre/power amp in the future.

I will be connecting a turntable in the future probably a Rega but that is on hold at present.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I have a 92R/90.3 driving an old pair of Mission 733's in my living room at the moment, mainly for A/V use. I recently had my CD3.5 in that system for a little while though and it sounded quite good. The 733's sounded better driven by 32.5/SNAPS/140 as well. They're pleasant enough speakers for the money (I think mine were £300 new) - the treble is a bit rough but the bass is ok for a budget speaker (good extension if a little lacking in control).

If you've got a grand to spend I'd recommend that you consided Intros or 2nd hand Credos. Credos would benefit from a better power amp but buying them 2nd hand should leave you cash over for a used 110 or 140. I've used both with my Credos and either performs well.

I have always enjoyed the sound of Dynaudio on the end of Naim equipment, your system is 'similar' to mine, or at least similar to the system in which i have heard many Dyn speakers.

I would highly recommend the Contour Range as a minimum, and for that price range look at the Contour 1.1 or if you live near Worcester (UK) Audio Excellence have some 1.3 mk II's for a 1000 pounds...INHO, the Contour 1.1's do everything that Credo's do, but with a bit more weight to the bass.

Take a look here for Contour 1.1 info. and here for 1.3 info.

JM Lab 906's are definately worth an audition. They are a tad over your budget, but, in my humble opinion blow Credos away, at least when used with Naim gear. This view comes from an extended listening period (over three weeks) and the eventual purchase of the 906's with Accuphase stands.....Brilliant.

What's the minimum power-amp to use with SBL's?

Steve,
When I asked Naim at the beginning of this year if the 140 I had at the time was suitable, they said it was the minimum they would recommend. The 250 I have bought since gives a fuller sound, unsurprisingly, but I bought my SBL's because of how good they sounded on the end of the 140.

I run my sbls with a 90, its not the largest room I have to say, but the whole set up workd well.

I would guess in a larger room the 90 won't cut it, but you may find a great deal on SBLs and I would seriously consider getting them, then after that the poweramp, there seems to be more amps on the market than SBLs so if you want them grab em!

I bought the Triangle Zephyrs about 3 years ago to replace some ageing Heybrook HB2s. I thought they were pretty tuneful and sweet sounding - I was driving them with a 62/140 (I think, they were half-width boxes anyway smile).

The Zephyrs have now given way to SBLs but the Zephyrs looked nicer and didn't sound much worse IMHO. But then again, most forum members probably think I'm half deaf as I think my CDX sounds better on my old Sound Org table than it does on Mana.

Speakers are something that's actually quite fun to demo, as they often have immediately different characters, so you don't find yourself hunting for tiny nuances to evaluate purchases.

Cheers

It can, it is obviously more comfortable on the end of something like a 140, but in a smallish room (like mine) then it works fine...the 1.3 runs easier but I prefer the 1.1's myself.

Don't buy Linn Ninkas - horrible speaker.

Try the less expensive Dynaudio range, or Intro IIs.
