Combi Printer/Scanner/Copier, recommendations?
Posted by: BigH47 on 13 February 2010
Our Canon Pixma MP500 is leaving thick black lines on the back of printed pages. It's scanner section seems to be invisible to OSX.
Obvious choice seems to be the Canon MP 560, which has built in wireless.
Could some one please explain the line in the scanner part of the spec:- "TWAIN / WIA (Windows XP/Windows Vista)"
Does this mean that the scanner only works for XP/Vista?
Are there any other printers recommended? Fax not required.

WIA is Windows Image Acquisition so is likely to be Windows only
TWAIN will work with anything.

Thanks for that, it was I was having so much trouble getting a scan into the iMAC I was wondering if that is a OSX failure.
Would you believe I have just downloaded the same drivers and MP navigator 2 from Canon and presto it works.
Bloody computers.

There is a new HP which will scan and import wirelessly. I would look at that. Once you get it to work with the mac, you will like it better than the Epson or Canon I bet.

For Photo printing I have had a lot of success with the Epson Photo series. I do hammer them to death though.
If you do not need high quality photo printing, then they are probably not worth the price. If you are mainly printing documents, text then you have a lot of options formore reasonably priced scanners.
The paper you use is quite key, again for photo images, or CD artworks with detailed text I have found the Jessops paper to be excellent. It is also very good for printing out stuff for model railways.

To be honest 99% of the time it's just documents, I was wanting to be able to scan to PC/HD family pictures, and was having trouble getting the MAC to see the Canon.
As I mentioned earlier I seem to have cracked that now.
We will poke up with the Canon stripe for a bit longer I think, it has been quite good, it prints every time ,unlike an Epson we had that didn't like being idle for any length of time.
We saw a rather neat wireless Brother yesterday, but looking on the web later saw that the spec wasn't too great.
Thanks for the responses.

I bought a cheap-ish HP laserjet what must be years ago. I don't print that much but over the period I have printed loads. I have yet to change the toner module and it still works perfectly.
If you have the space and you print substantial proportion of documents in B&W I would strongly recommend a cheap laser. They pay for themselves several times over in savings on colour printer cartridges for bubblejets.
Doesn't answer your question though!!
(For pictures, if you have the negatives or slides, a dedicated scanner will provide best results).

I don't have your addy Jon.
I think I have the Canon working to the MAC, I'll not have a chance to play until Tuesday, but fingers crossed.

MACs just work, things connected to them don't always.
I would know or know where to go to get PC problems sorted. It's just a lot of things now, down to my ignorance of things MAC .

I bought the HP 4580 for mom and 4680 for myself. I had problems getting mine to work and sometimes mom's just doesn't wake up so have to unplug and replug. She doesn't understand all that.
Once I upgraded to Snow Leopard mine just doesn't work thru the icon on the dock. I am really frustrated. Called HP, spent hours trying to reinstall it all. They told me it was Mac's problem, and Mac told me it was HP problem.
Wish I'd kept the old HP simple printer but I wanted to scan family pics and my artwork. It prints fine and copies fine. Forget the scanner
