One Hundred Al***s You Should Remove from Your Collection Immediately

Posted by: Roy T on 12 January 2003

I saw this headline in a music e-zine out of the USA and thought others may have additional suggestions for the list. The follow up discussion / bitching sometimes gets a bit heated, you have been warned! One Hundred Albums You Should Remove from Your Collection Immediately
Posted on: 14 January 2003 by Andrew L. Weekes
I've about 25 of them here, and I wouldn't get rid of any!

Mr.T - Go get that copy of Nevermind, crank the volume to 11 and ENJOY...in fact I bought my Linn Kans on the basis of hearing this album (amongst others) through them - you wouldn't begrudge me that start on the road to musical nirvana would you Smile

I reckon this guy's done us all a favour by prompting us to dig into our collections and put some of these back on the spinner to see what he's griping about.

being around him.

This is spot on. There's a lot of sensible comments on this page. I think if the list had been titled and geared more at 100 most overrated albums ever, then it would be easier to take a bit more interest.

There are many albums that I feel are overrated but it doesn't mean they aren't good (or even great)

Anyway what's wrong with Rainbow's 'On Stage

Are we in danger of taking this a bit too seriously? Surely it is healthy to kill the odd sacred cow? I had about five from the list and must confess to never really getting either 'Bitches Brew' or 'Giant Steps' although I love other music by the respective artists. I think his coments about the Beatles were a bit OTT (and inaccurate). But hey ho it got us talking.

This is really just provocative rubbish. The guy does seem to be very limited in the breadth of his taste, and really it's not to hard to have a go at any music if you care to take the time. Most of his picks are 'soft targets' that he knows a lot of people will have in their record collections - REM, Nirvana, Pink Floyd, U2 etc...

The only comment I tend to agree with is 'Being there' by Wilco. I can't see what the fuss is about either (although I've only played it maybe twice.)

well said!
And btw no one´s gonna tell what´s good or bad that´s entirely my own decision.
But some of it was quite funny IMO.
23 out of 100!

Well, rather than albums, how about sacred cow single songs you've just never really understood the appeal of? And yes, I know it's all down to personal taste and whatever floats your boat, but...

"American Pie": a great 3 minute pop song... that lasts for 8 1/2 minutes and causes horribly large percentages of tone deaf people listening to it to sing/holler along. Are the lyrics deep, or are they deep schmdeep? My money's on the latter, and there are far too many of them.

Take my critique above, and apply pretty much word for wod to "Where do you go to my lovely?", though at least the singalong degree isn't as great and tends to limit itself to the contrived line endings.

"Wonderful tonight", which I've been told several times is incredibly romantic and gets played at the ends of parties where people are snuggling up to one another. Some people seem to think slow == romantic, but I've listened to the words and it's a tale of how Eric has too much to drink at a party and has an accordingly sore head. That's romantic, yeah?

I wouldn't advocate exorcising them from a collection, but I do wonder why they're held in such general reverence.

How about; house of the rising sun.
When that comes along I wanna go home.

Nice one!

I would nominate "Sexual Healing" by Marvin Gaye. A once-great artist reduced to peddling over-produced, completely obvious pap. I can recall many a dreadful '80s party at which some drunk sloanette would appropraite the record/CD player and slap this guff on...

Bohemian Rhapsody: I run screaming at the first hint of Qu**n generally; this one has me reaching for the razor blade.

Sacred cow?

Hey Jude - especially when sung by the massed ranks at the end of a charity concert. It goes on for hours...

I only score 8 out of 100 and some of them are on tapes, so I have at least another 92 to add to my must buy list.

Doesn't ummagumma have granhester meadows on? I quite liked that.

I am ashamed to have the first 4 genesis albums ,post gabriel, The yes album, Thriller (its my sister's), plus bags more if I ever looked.

I have 11 of them. And, yes I could happily live without them. I think the listing is valid, to me it manages to live up to what it's meant to do. Well known albums that, when one think about it, is not worth to be "Well known".

Bummer

Why is everyone dissing Ummagumma? I know I'm probably completely alone here, but I think it's one of the Floyd's two or three best albums - the live bit is almost certainly the best thing the post-Barrett Floyd have ever committed to record...

Score 2 for GM (which I like too), lose one for DG's contribution (he's subsequently described it as "waffling"), and lose several million each for Messers Wright and Mason's efforts. The live sets are okay if you're feeling acidic. Net result isn't worth it, IMHO.

This wouldn't be in my top ten floyd albums never mind the top two or three.

very amusing

I've got 17 out of 100 of em

Some of them are a little close to the bone...Alicia Keys and the Flaming Lips to name 2.

I think Mule Variations is one of Tom's best !!

"DAMN!!! I have 63! I must be a major loser!"

I would say winner, but the ultimate winner has to be the person who has the highest number from the list as a proportion of his total collection. ie if you have all one hundred and nothing else, because 63 may only be 1% of Mr Naimgaim's collection and the other 5670 might not be as good.
