Computers and mains

Posted by: Mike Sae on 01 October 2001

Hi

I'm moving my system onto the same circut as the computer. From what I've read here, the switching power supplies from computers ruin Naim systems.

Will plugging the computer into a line conditoner (an Adcom left over from my old round earther)
filter the garbage transmitted by the computer?

Thank you,

Mike

It's the filters that are a major part of the problem.

Many Lingo owners have recently reported major benefits from removing the filters from their Lingos.

I suspect your Adcom will just make things worse.

I always unplug my computer when having a serious listening session ,even though it's on a separate spur.

cheers, Martin

My office system is plugged into the same circuit as two (sometimes three) computers. It actually doesn't sound bad, although it's a little cleaner when the computers aren't on. I suspect, though, that this has more to do with power drain than power noise. Perhaps you'll find it to be different, but it doesn't seem to bug me too much.

BTW, this system is setup in a near-field-monitoring configuration, and I don't push it very loud. I usually notice the most problems when driving systems hard, so that may explain why it hasn't bothered me.

Mike,

one day, try the experiment of unplugging all computers on that circuit.
