Do the shops in UK sells just the shorting plug??
Posted by: silklee on 16 May 2002
My friend is going to get himself a used cd3 but the shorting plug is missing.
We contacted our dealer here and he is selling it at what we think is a ridiculous price.
What is the practice in UK? Do the dealers have spares to give away or do you also have to buy it? and if so, how much do they usually charge?

Most people get in touch with Naim directly. I'm not sure if Naim send them out free, or for a nominal cost, but it's certainly not very expensive.

You're right Chris.
If it were my customer for these things, i'd charge a minimal cost or give it free, unless the customer wanted one flown in right away. Happily, more than half my customers still work on win-win, thats the way I like best.

I do charge for the pucks as it's a deterrent to have
(1) my child misplaced it - 3 x last yr, 1 x this yr - yesterday in fact.
(2) i dont know where i put it - 2 x last yr
(3) i think my dog ate it - 1 x last yr
(4) maid/husband/someone else threw it away by mistake - 2 x last yr.
of course if the rubber feet are flattened for the CD3.0., 3.5, CDX and CDS2 I advise people to use a pair of tweeters and rotate the rubber to a more appropriate shape.
removing pucks lost inside players is for free. most people are nice enough to wait for up to half an hour if we're busy

Naim is not Flat Earth - only people who dont understand it say so. Whilst you are new and it is excusable to regard it as such, based on the Naim's self styled ways, you'll find many people who have used Naim for years to still make these references. In fact, the more you get into it, you'll find Naim's approach as fundamental as it gets. In fact, most other manufacturers are the ones with the flat earth fool's gold approach.

PS using the CD5 with tubes are okay. This is a useful yardstick - the Naim has wide dynamic swings and is very fast. So, as you know your manufacturer has used a dynamic and fast turntable in his design of the amp, the amp should be able to handle the CD5. I urge you to try a good solid state amp in the event you feel you want to upgrade the CD in the future, as tube designs have, unfortunately, serious compromises in phase.

After having the cd5 for about 2 weeks or so, I am really starting to think that the cd5 will only show its full potential using ss amplification. I somehow think that my present tube amplification slows down the pace of the cd5 and also compromises on the slam that the cd5 can produce.
I heard it with the nait (don’t know which one) and the roksan capsian. Was very impressed with both. Actually I am starting to think that the capsian is one of the better ss int amps that I have heard. Either that, or it just partners beautifully with the cd5.
But since I got both my pre and power only recently, I will have to stick with that. Not that it doesn’t sound nice now, just that it is not as nice as I thought it would be. When I pop in the REM’s whats the frequency kenneth, it still sounds compressed and messy. But that’s probably because of my speakers also. But pop songs sounds real nice.

Hi, Silklee, I suggest you sacrifice and let go of your pre/power and get into Naim, Vik may have a 72 pre lying around, and a power amp. It will save you a lot of frustration - no more cable messing, matching problems ... the upgrade ladder is well-thought out too ...
